If you don't mind saying, what town/college is it? Depending on where you are needing to move, it's totally doable to find a month-to-month, especially in a larger college-town, I think.

Have you actually contacted the college's housing office? You could always just live in a dorm for a semester. It would suck balls, but it might be the easiest solution. You could also just live in a longer-term hotel. My boyfriend's undergrad school required multiple internships so every other semester he was living in some random place around the country. He stayed in a motel in Denver once, and those shouldn't be too hard to find, again, depending on the town.

It's in Kent, OH. There is a part of me that wouldn't mind doing the dorms, but my husband will be coming to visit me a few times during the semester. That won't work well, at all (twin bed, sharing a bathroom, he has to be escorted at all times, etc.).

I did a marathon search yesterday online, and I finally decided to expand my search a few miles outside Kent. I really wanted to live in town, walk to class, be a part of the community, but the living choices in town are dumpy or have to be shared or are unfurnished or require 12-month leases, etc. I found some possibilities in Cuyahoga Falls. It'll be a 20-min drive to campus, but that's ok. I did that drive when I went to school there and worked at the mall many, many years ago.

I know I'm being picky, but I'm used to living in a nice house, and my husband is quite particular.

I have contacted the res life dept, and they said "oh you're going to have a tough time..." Kent is behind when it comes to understanding that not everyone is an 18-year-old freshman member of a captive audience.

I also looked into doing the whole time at a long-term stay hotel, but they're priced at $75/night and not budging.

Ugh, sorry to hear that your options are well, not really options. How the heck does Kent not have more options? Isn't it a relatively large college?

Anyway, I'm totally with you on the being picky thing. Once you are past 21 years old and are an "adult" there just no way I could deal with a crappy house and/or living situation, even for just one semester.

Certainly a month-to-month would be best under the circumstances. No matter what your living arrangements are, when hub comes to visit, you can/should get a hotel room. This would probably be more fun for you both! You can put up with a less than ideal living situation if you have a nice weekend in a hotel to look forward to.

If you have to break a lease, you should only obligated for the rent and advertising costs until the LL can replace you. If you find them a new tenant (who passes credit check etc.) then you really can't be penalized much. Worth checking on the laws in OH, anyway.

Professors might rent a room to you since you're an adult and a colleague. In faculty housing it may be prohibited, but who's gonna know? I had a professor who always had one or two students living in her house.
