My mom has admired my gizehs- so i thought i would get her birkenstocks for mothers day. I think she would like B the best of these- i just hate to pay retail! i like A b/c its leather and on sale- but is the color too boring? (nearly matches her skin color)
parameters so far (feel free to comment on them)
color pref.- neutrals, olives, reds/burgundys
-leather - Am I right in thinking that leather is always best? There is that man-made "birko flor" material.....but Ive heard that it doesn't really breathe- more color options though.
-slip ons? im thinking slip ons are easier to wear- and my mom loves a clog so she is used to that....but would a back strap be more practical for walking around in the tropics?
any recs/advice? tia!
a)gizeh in habana (brown) oiled leather $80
b)gizeh in zinfandel oiled leather $120
c) Cairo in Mocha "birko-flor"- $52
d) Cairo in Stone Nubuck - $52
e) gizeh Red pebble grain "birko flor" $55

I've never worn them, so I can't comment on slip on or not (but I'm guessing if your mom can wear clogs where she lives, slip ons will be fine.) What color do you have? Maybe getting her a similar hue is a good idea since she like you pair so much? If you don't think the color matters, I'd get her a fun color since it's a gift. Something that she might not buy for herself (I do like the color in the B option. Maybe you can find last year's version cheaper on-line.)
You can't go wrong with the leather, but I imagine the plastic won't cause too much sweat and stick since it is such an open sandal. Do you think the dye in the leather would wear off if it were sweated upon?
Is there much chance these would get wet? I don't know how durable oiled leather is.
I don't think you can go wrong either way. Red is a staple in my closet, so I vote those or the oiled brown leather.
I have the gizehs in glossy black leather- so I do think that I will stick with the gizeh style for her. I have not experienced any color transfer at all. My mom will be traveling to Honduras in June, and Tanzania in october (annual trip)- so I am getting the sandals with those trips in mind.
I really like the notion of buying a "fun" color. I will keep an eye out for deals I see around- I got my leather ones for $60, but I bought them in winter so I expect to pay more at this point in the year. The only pair in her size on 6pm is patent, and that isn't her speed, unfortunately. Hopefully I will come across a sale or additional suitable color choices in leather before I make a final decision.

I like that gray a lot - it just depends on what 'her' colors are, I guess. Mother's Day is only two weeks away so shipping from Germany could be risky, eh?

I really really like the gray as well......but that means I would "borrow" hers....lol
I agree about germany sellers - I will be ordering by tuesday and have narrowed it down to 3 pairs from fast shippers- will post an update when all is said and done!
thanks so much for your help everyone! I was able to find the gizeh in zinfandel oiled leather on sale at birkenstockcentral.com for $89, so I grabbed them. My mom loves all things burgundy, but she is much too practical to buy such a color shoe- so I think she will be really happy. thanks soooo much for your help
The color was my original first choice- and interestingly QVC sells them, so I was able to watch the qvc sales schpeel video online to get a better idea of the color and material irl- which was really helpful (qvc item #A2142390)
in the meantime, that antique gray leather color has been on my brain, and look what I found on piperlime in antique gray.. (according to the reviews the pic is inaccurate and it is a darker, matte gray)
fun!- not entirely sure about the braid- but im sure id wear them everywhere...$130..hmm
