hand soap suggestions please
Permalink Closed

my daughters and i have really dry, red and cracked (sometimes bleeding) hands in the winter and anytime it's really dry out. ive tried many different types of lotions but they only seem to help temporarily. when i was visiting my aunt, i noticed she used L'Occitane soaps and those seemed to help my poor dried out hands a lot, but they cost $10 a bar.

does anyone have any suggestions for moisturizing hand soaps or bars that are a little cheaper?

Would cream based soap be better for you instead of bars? I know that cream soap is better for dry skin on faces. You might try some less expensive grocery store cream soap before shelling out for expensive bar soap.

This doesn't answer your handsoap question, but I wonder if parafin treatments would help. I love getting them at the spa. They make units for home. I think they are $40 ish at Target.

With winter nearly over, I'd spend the summer checking out what ingredients are drying in soap and finding a cheaper handsoap if possible.

The ingredients that make bar soaps solid are often very drying.  You could have a moisturizing liquid soap that is great, but the bar version sucks out moisture like crazy.

It may sound a little unconventional, but my advice would be to buy a moisturizing body wash and use it as a hand soap.  These would be good ones to consider:

Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Wash

Aveeno Stress Relief Body Wash

Aveeno Skin Relief Body Wash

Aquaphor Baby Gentle Wash & Shampoo

Jason Fragrance Free Satin Body Wash or any of the other Satin Body Washes

At home, we use Method fragrance free hand soap.  Hands still dry out, but not as badly as with some harsher soaps.  There are many handsoaps that are cream-based, like Boots suggested, and I think they work well too.

Cleansers are cleansers - - especially when comparing hand to body (instead of face to body or face to hand).  As long as your daughters wash thoroughly, there shouldn't be any difference/problem.

I guess the only thing to watch out for would be body washes that don't rinse well.

Not that you need one more thing to do at bedtime (I don't know how old your daughters are either), maybe getting in the habit of applying some lotion at night would be helpful for warding off dryness.  Moisturizing after washing helps immensely too.  Washing compromises skin's protective barrier, and moisturizer (and protecting from sun and wind) helps maintain the barrier.

I would use a a moisturizing liquid hand soap.  I think bar soaps are way to drying.  Having said that - way back in the day I used Neutrogena bar soap.  That one is not drying, if you prefer bar soap.  Not quite as expensive either.
