So my M.I.L. is the QUEEN of TMI. I mean, it's really bad. She's always talking about various health problems, gastrointestinal disorders she's currently having, and the exact side effects she has with Mexican food, Indian food, and Splenda. And this is always over dinner. Ugh!
So, tonight she calls to say she wants to come visit. Normally I talk to her for about 10 minutes and manage to pass the phone off to my husband, who was, unfortunately, at work tonight. So, his mom proceeds to tell me about her new exercise bike and how it's great for her knees cause it's low impact, but that it rubs her the wrong way in her butt and then proceeds to tell me that it hurts so bad it makes her bleed!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! I wanted to scream! I do not need to know this kind of detail about her health and body disorders!!!!
Does anyone have any idea how to make this stop? I feel like every conversation I have with her is pretty much along these lines and it's not pleasant!
Heeeeeeeeeeeeeelp before I have to spend a week listening to it!
all i can say is change the subject, change it fast and change it often until she takes a hint. i have no idea what your mother in law's personality is like but is it possible that she's doing this to get attention/gross you out? or is she just that oblivious and gauche?
on a tangential note, she's gotta be at least a little bit dim not to realize she should STOP biking if it is making her bleed for heaven's sake!
ok, i know it's not funny to you right now, but this is priceless. i was laughing out loud at my desk reading about it. what a crazy person!
i don't know that i have much to offer in the way of solutions. does she have a sense of humor? maybe you could make light of it with a joke that will draw her attention?

Oh, fab suggestion!! That's what I ALWAYS do when someone annoys me or acts inappropriately. If I can gently make fun of a thing that a person does, they realize people notice they're doing it and they become a little more self-aware. And most of the time the people have a sense of humor and can laugh at themselves too.
Hmmmm....I think it's a good idea to make a joke about it, but how do I make a joke about anal bleeding or diarehea? I mean, this is NOT something I was brought up talking about--my family keeps health problems within the family, and even then they're not discussed in great detail--so having her tell me her health issues, as well as every other family member or friend's health issues is totally foreign to me. And that's the other thing--she'll tell me about her boyfriend's health problems, her friends' health problems and other family members' health problems. It's always totally unsolicited and it's always something I just don't want to know about. I'm just afraid that if she ever finds out about any health problem of mine in the future that it would be broadcast to everyone she knows in great detail. Ughhhhhhhhhhhh!
I don't think she does this to gross me out or get a reaction out of me. I never react to what she has to say about stuff like this--I just keep the conversation moving along as if she didn't say anything. She's a retired nurse, so I think this is just something she thinks is appropriate to discuss.
Oh, yes, and the humor of it all is not lost on me either. Part of me thinks it's hillarious, part of me thinks it's disgusting.
Oh, ok. Now that you say she was a nurse, it makes total sense. I'm sure she was trained to talk about anything and everything with her patients and after a while you forget that most people aren't that open about their problems and bodily functions. Next time I would just say something to her like, "Wow, that's really too much information! You don't need to share that with EVERYONE." But do it in a lighthearted manner...maybe she'll get the point without being offended.
Hmm, to make a joke, instead of saying something about the actual topic, maybe say something along the lines of what Claudia was saying. Like when she tells you these things over the phone, just sort of choke and be like, "Ewww, I'm eating!" or something.

You just described my mother. She is also a nurse. I have tried a million times to make her stop but she CAN'T! She is my mom and I am pretty used to it, but she still surprises me and grosses me out sometimes.
I think your best bet is to just tell her. Something like this- "MIL I know you are a nurse and this is all second nature for you, but I am not as used to and comfortable talking about bodily functions and gross stuff. Im my family we were much more reserved on this subject."
Totaly emphasize you know she is used to it but you are not. Just make sure she knows you think she is so great and funny, and you are the one with the problem of a weak stomach or something to that effect.
