Question on friends losing a baby
Permalink Closed

A couple who is good friends with my brother and SIL just lost their baby this AM.  He was born with little to no heartbeat and passed soon after he was born.  I just ache for these people.  I'm friendly with them, but only through my brother and SIL.  I'd like to send a card or something, but I have no idea what the proper thing is?  I'm not close enough to call, but want to extend some sympathy.

Does any one have any advice?  The mom is Jewish, if that matters.  Normally I'd send a mass card, but obviously that isn't proper in this case.  THey also have a young son as well.  Would it be OK to maybe send the son a book or something with a sympathy card for the parents?  He's only 2 and must be confused by everything right now.

I'm just at a loss.

Oh how sad. The book and card sounds very thoughtful. Will there be a funeral?

I think a card and book are a perfect idea. I think a simple sympathy card or a blank card with a handwritten note are the way to go. So sad.

How terrible. I'm sure any way you reach out will be appreciated. A card would be very nice. I'd watch for the obit and see if they are taking donations to a specific foundation in lieu of flowers and consider making a contribution there.

What an awful thing to experience. I agree with GD.

Thanks, everyone. I don't know about a funeral yet (just happened yesterday afternoon.) I wasn't sure if the book for the oldest son would be considered odd and I feel much better about sending it now. My heart just aches for them. My brother and I had actually just found out the awful news after having gotten back from a funeral that morning. It was a hell of day.

Wow, that's horrible. I think what you sent (book and card) is perfect and a very thoughtful gesture. My heart goes out to this family. :(
