Has anyone had an Achilles repair?

My hubby injured his playing basketball. We consult on Monday to see if he'll need surgery. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for just a partial tear so he can rest to repair instead of surgery.

Just wondering what to expect.

oh my gosh - no experience, but I couldn't even imagine injuring it!

He will have surgery in about 2 weeks to repair it. I guess its a fairly long recovery but the incidence of re-injury is less than 1%.

What a pain - will this affect his ability to work?

Well, since he is self employed, he doesn't need to wait for a doctor to clear him to return to work. But, I assume he will need a few days rest before working. Thankfully his clients are super supportive (as is his partner), so even if he has a bit of trouble moving about they will still be able to train with him. New clients will probably see his business partner so they get someone who can get around better. Today is his first day back since the injury, so we'll see how that goes.

I think not playing golf and softball over the summer will drive him crazy. He will definetly push it... I will have to constantly nag for him to take it easy.

good - glad he has back up (I knew he was striking out on his own, but I didn't know details and whether it's physical work or not.) I'm sure this summer will be a challenge, but he's just got to remember that it will only take longer to heal if he pushes it!

So true.  And guys can be so childish about this.  It's not nagging, it's watching out for his best interests (and your's since it could affect his employment prospects.)

He feels as though if it doesn't hurt, it isn't bothering the injury... For example, yesterday while I was out at an appointment he shoveled the patio and an area for the dog to do her business. It didn't hurt him, so he figured it was a fine thing to do. I argue that because he had to do it differently, he could have injured a new part. Or, he could have slipped in his plastic boot (it's like a moon-boot air cast type of thing) and hurt himself/cracked  his head open, or done something else I can't imagine. These things just don't occur to him.

Thankfully winter is almost over, that will help the slipping fear of mine. I am just going to have to hire someone to do some things so he isn't inclined to try.
