If you click on the photo you can delete it from your profile page (but not from the photo section.) I haven't been able to figure out how to get photos I want to take their place though. But there are some very savvy fb ladies here whom I'm sure can tell us how.

I don't think you can actually get rid of that strip, but you can stop the ones you don't like from showing up at the top by clicking on it.

The second one is important because--while trying to determine which pics I wanted on my profile--I deleted too many and had a big, ugly whitespace at the top.

You can see that you really can't not use that option. I can't remember if you can just x out each pic that naturally appears up top until they're all gone.

How do I remove the photos at the top of my profile?

To prevent a specific photo from appearing at the top of your profile, roll over the photo and click the "x" in the top-right corner. This will not delete your photo it can still be found on your photos page.

Remember that only the people selected in your current "Photos and videos I'm tagged in" setting will see these photos. You can adjust this setting from the "Sharing on Facebook" section of your Privacy Settings page. To get there, follow these steps:

Choose the "Privacy Settings" option in the Account drop-down menu at the top of any Facebook page.
Select "Customize Settings" in the "Sharing on Facebook" section.
Change the setting for "Photos and videos I'm tagged in."

How can I unhide a photo that I removed from the photos at the top of my profile?

To unhide the photos that you've removed from the top of your profile:

1. Click on Edit Profile.
2. Click on "Profile Picture."
3. Select the "Unhide All" button located next to "Row of photos at top of profile." Selecting this button will make all of the photos that you've previously removed appear at the top of your profile again.

A quick fix I usually do is tag myself in photos I would like to see on that top row until the other ones are kicked off.

If you don't like them, you can always remove the tag of yourself

Thanks, girls! Very helpful. I don't want to untag myself just remove the pics from my profile. I'm wondering if the pics appear in reverse chronological order with the most recent tagged pics appearing first? It appears that way.

Yes, I think so. But the little x will keep it off your photostrip or whatever they call that - it doesn't untag you or anything else.
