I'm a little stumped about how to decorate our new kitchen. It is very bright and open, but country style which I hate. Everything is in very good condition so we don't want to spend much time or money redoing it right now.

We want to stip off the wallpaper boarder (featuring roosters and pigs *shudder*) and paint. The cabinets are oak but I want to change the drawer pulls. The floor is white lino, the appliances are all white, our dishes are all white. What I am stumped the most about is that the counter tops are pinky-burgundy. I am not really sure how to decorate or what colors to go with it. Any ideas?

EDIT: here are some pics, sorry they don't show more detail. I accidentally deleted the main pic of the kitchen

for an idea about the counter top color

the tiles of the back splash (won't be changed for now)

not our furniture, our table is oak

hmmm...it's hard to say but maybe you could paint your walls a charcoal gray, a deep shade of blue (navy) or a nice khaki...if your countertops are more pinky than burgundy you could even go with a chocolate brown.  Then maybe add some sleek silver-toned knobs, and drawer pulls...don't know if you have a picture but that might help to inspire the group...

Interesting - I was just at my parents' condo in Michigan, and they have the same oak cabinet/pinky countertop combo.  It was like that when they bought it, and my mom went with kind of a "parisian" feel.

She had the walls painted yellow, like the top bowl...

latte bowls

And two cabinets have glass windows, where she keeps these...

tazza cups

You could also paint/use accent pieces in the green color of the top mug.  And then she redid the floor in a black and white checkerboard pattern like this...

The only things on the countertop are a stainless coffee maker and toaster.

A friend also did her floors like this using adhesive linoleum square tiles.  You just peel off the back and stick them on your old lino floor.

I'm sure other people will have great suggestions - it is totally workable!

A picture would help to get ideas of what can be done.  I like the idea of painting the walls brown or navy.  You can go to the Sherwin Williams store and get a small conatiner of paint for $5 to test out a small area or go to https://www.benjaminmoore-colorsamples.com/benmoore/bmselitm.pgm  and get samples for $5 (free shipping when you order 4 or more) that paint a 2'x 2' area.

I love the idea of paiting the walls chocolate brown or cafe au lait.  Just a word of caution, like Courtney said, test a few colors.  We painted our living area "desert sand" and some of our first sample tries looked like poop (literally).

How about teal or a cream color.

I agree with a brown color for the walls, maybe a dark mocha.  And then I'd go with a Tuscan-vibe

Just some ideas of the feel/look I mean.  Hope this helps

Would you want to paint all the cabinets?  It would be a huge job, but if you hate country then it would help a lot.  Then your wall color options would be more open.  If you don't like the accent tiles on the wall (which also limit your color choices), there are ceramic paints that you could just paint over them - solid color or paint cute designs on them.  Again, some work but well worth it if you don't want to tear them down and deal w/ that expense!

Peel and stick tiles have come a long way.  There's some very nice options if you want an inexpensive floor fix
