My husband and I (and the kids) are moving back to the States this summer and he will have 5 weeks of vacation time in which to visit family and friends. In the past we have used this time to go from house to house and hotel to hotel and it's exhausting. So this year we've decided to pick a city, rent a furnished house with a yard or cottage on the waterfront, stay put the whole time, and have family come to us.
We're trying to think of a city that would meet our needs and would have lots of things to do so we wouldn't get bored there. This is our criteria:
1. somewhere in the South (Georgia, Florida, S Carolina, etc.) or East Coast (Maine, Massachusetts) 2. not too hot during summer 3. a really cute walkable town (it can be small) with good restaurants, outdoor markets, festivals, etc. and a decent art scene (more museums vs. galleries). We're thinking cobblestone streets or maybe a small harbour town setting. 4. a beach within an hrs drive or less
UDPATE - We decided on Portland, Maine and are looking for a home to rent. Any ideas on POrtland or Maine in general are welcome!

Thanks, Boots - we've never been to Maine so are excited to check it out! We are also looking for cooler temperatures than in the south.
That's a good idea. I went to Savannah for a week in September last year and it was still very hot. Can't imagine how sweltering it would be during the summer.
