I was actually listening to NPR when she said this. My jaw dropped to the floor when she made that statement! Oh and it was not taken out of context - she blatantly said it - and NPR said goodbye to her shortly after (probably in shock as well).
Can someone post a link to the sound clip of Barbara Bush saying what she said? I work w/this woman who loves Bush and thinks there's no way Babs actually said this..I'd love nothing more than her to hear it herself.
I was listening to NPR this morning and I heard Laura Bush talking about Katrina and she said something along the lines of...Across the board I think things are going well. I believe we're just seeing a lot of the same clips which are not really representative of what's truly going on (this is paraphrasing what she said, it's not a direct quote). I was shocked Laura's remark but it's nothing compared to the choice words of her MIL.
I really thought that I had responded to this post, but I was rereading and apparently I didn't. Probably b/c immediate reaction to this little speech of Mrs. Bush's was my jaw dropping to the floor. I'm just appalled that someone, anyone, let alone a former First Lady would have the audacity to even think such a thing. And the fact that she actually said is absolutely mindboggling.
I'm actually really surprised that there hasn't been a bigger stink about it! Maybe I've missed it, but I only heard about it here, and saw ONE op/ed page in the tribune that referred to it, but I haven't seen any references to it anywhere else. It cracked me up, the Tribune columnist wrote, "and here comes the fastball right over the middle of the Democratic plate..." and then quoted her line about things working out quite well. I mean, there's JUST nothing you can say in response to that. The woman has to be clinically insane, there is no other explanation.
