wasn't he pretty conservative anyway though? So it won't make much of a difference? Not that I want Bush to be able to appoint someone else...

yes, but the judge he hopes to appoint to fill sandra day o'connor's spot is ultra conservative. if bush were to nominate another person to fill the spot of renquist (sp?), he could very well nominate someone who is also super conservative, which would make the majority of the supreme court on the conservative side. which is would be very bad. at least imo.

Does anyone remember the talk about why O'Connor really retired? I can't remember what I read, but there was speculation that it wasn't just to spend time w/ her sick husband.

Even though Rehnquist was pretty conservative, it would be better to have three more years of a conservative justice and then have an oppurtunity to appont a liberal one for like 20 more if a Democrat were in office next. Now we'll have 20 more years of a coservative justice.

I have searched & can't find it anywhere. Since she's from AZ, we were inundated with stories when she retired, but I sort of tuned it out. I thought it was something like she was hoping to be Chief Justice, but was told it wasn't going to happen, so she decided to retire.

I don't think I ever heard why O'Connor was retiring, other than she was just retiring.


Today I heard that Bush is going to appoint John Roberts to be Chief Justice and appoint someone else to fill the O'Connor seat.  It seems odd to me though, because I thought Chief Justice usually went to the Justice with the most seniority. 


The idea that Bush gets to appoint two SC justices is quite scary to me.  I guess I knew it all along since Rehnquist wasn't well and all of the other justices are pretty old that it was pretty likely that he would get at least one, if not two appointments.  I'm just hoping that no one else decides to retire during the next three years!

I assumed this was the case as well but it isn't true. I heard a legal expert on the radio say that it was not uncommon for a new justice to be appointed as chief justice. I found one article which states "It would not be unusual for someone outside the court to become chief justice. Rehnquist was only the third of 16 chiefs to be promoted from associate justice." link

who is John Roberts? can we assume that he is conservative?  this is so disturbing, I almost can't even believe it.  I feel like we are taking a backwards step in time....

seriously, noone could be more conservative than Renquist!!!
And the Senate isn't going to approve someone too conservative like Renquist was so in that case it is a good thing. Roberts will be more middle of the road, still conservative but not a Facist.

i am pretty sure that sandra day o'connor's husband is very sick and she is retiring so that she can spend more time with him.
