I'm not trying to start a political war here or anything but seriously. It's a good thing Bush is concerned over one of the greatest national disasters to ever hit the U.S. The picture was taken yesterday. I'm so upset about Katrina and then to see this. I don't know how to deal with my anger (albeit I might be displacing a bit onto him).
According to the AP: President Bush plays a guitar presented to him by Country Singer Mark Wills, right, backstage following his visit to Naval Base Coronado, Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005.
Edited to change date from today to yesterday and answer Nyla's question.
This picture makes me sad. If I were president I would be in a helicopter flying over NO to find as many survivors as I could. He was right there for 9/11, where is he now, this disaster is just as bad if not worse! I know we can't start a war like we did to "punish" whoever was responsible for 9/11, we can't fight mother nature, but people need HELP!!! Get out there George W!!!! WTF!!!
Tell me about it. Especially when you consider that for the Schiavo stuff he was on the pulpit, uh, excuse me, press conference podium immediately and even canceled his trip he was on to hurry back to Washington. Priorities man!
Just because he is playing a guitar presented to him at a naval base doesn't mean he isn't concerned about Katrina.
Oh, okay, so that's what was going on. I just had no idea where this picture was from. Wasn't he on vacation though and he cut it short b/c of Katrina? I could be wrong.

oh, wow, he cut his five-week vacation short because part of the country is suffering from a natural disaster? what a guy!
not that i've ever been a fan of w, but i get more angry at/about him almost daily. and when i think about how much money he and his cronies are probably raking in with this gas crisis right now....

I think "concerned" is the operative word here. You're totally right. Playing a guitar at a naval base doesn't mean he isn't concerned. However does it mean he isn't horrified, appalled, shocked, worried about hundreds of thousands of people? Yeah, I kinda think it does.

I find this highly disturbing, "They added that although he will be traveling past the affected region en route to the capital, he does not plan to stop to view the damage for fear of getting in the way but will probably visit later in the week when the situation on the ground is calmer."
um, the president does not "get in the way" and he should DEFINATELY visit, not probably....

Just want to clarify that I wasn't condoning his behavior, just asking a question b/c I hadn't really read too much about it. I think he's a bit of a pinhead, really.

Yes, I agree. He definitely needs to be there! Passing by doesn't count.

I know not everyone agrees with what is going on but there is really no way for the president to get into NO. Everything is shut down and the superdome is pretty much an island. There are now 2 big breaks in the levees and water is just rushing in and they can't get people out of there in time. Helicopters are flying all around trying to save people so they don't need anyone else in the area including the Pres. He really should wait a few days and then go down when they have cleared people out and it is safer.
Just my opinion since I know people down there and hear from them about what is going on.

I have to agree - I don't see the point of him being there. Flying over to see the damage? sure, but they are evacuating EVERYONE - there are people standing on the bridges / interstate - there's really no where for him to be. Not to mention the reported gun fire in the places you can get to possibly by helicopter or something, looting, snakes, etc - it's really not safe.

Both of you make very good points, but I still think he's a pinhead!
LOL - yes, I have to agree. I'd much rather see him working on this gas nightmare than playing some guitar - even if getting it as a gift from a naval base.

I'm not necessarily saying he should be IN Louisiana (although I do believe he should see the devastation firsthand and not Friday when things could potentially be better). BUT I do think it's a bit callous to be playing around when a national disaster is in process. Especially if you're the president of the country where the worst national disaster ever (at least arguably) is occurring.

Laken1 is right.
And this post has me fired up!
I am a supporter of Bush, not because I am a die-hard republican but I do believe that he is our President and we, the people, should stand behind his decisions even if we don't completely agree with him all the time.
What exactly do you want him to do at this time? He is obviously in support of the Red Cross and I'm sure he is sending money and troops to help (if he hasnt already).
If he was flying over in a helicopter today, I think some people would probably criticize him for not climbing down on a rope and saving people himself. Which is ridiculous.. he is not trained to help these people BUT he is supporting and sending those people who can help.
He is a leader.. Leader of the free world.. It wouldnt look good if he came on TV crying over the tragedy. He is supposed to project an image of strength, hope and faith in the good of our nation. Not dwell on the bad things. He was not elected to get his hands dirty, but to direct, support and manage those who are involved everyday (like the Military)
All I really mean, is that people are too critical of the President. No matter how he handles issues, people will always hound him and attack him for not doing what they think he should be doing. I think some commentators just want something to complain about.
I hope noone takes this personally.. But I am very pro-American, and although I may not agree with everything Bush does, I think it makes American look weak when Americans hate the President.
