Cosmetic Dermatology treatments

I'm curious to hear if anyone has had some of the cosmetic dermatology treatments available and what your experiences/results have been. I'm considering at least a laserpeel and have booked a consultation. Thoughts?

No input, but would love to hear a review once you've done it! I'd like to get a laserpeel or something along those lines sometime soon. I'm 29, and feel like the texture and condition of my skin leaves a lot to be desired.

I used to get microderm treatments pretty regularly when I lived in Tulsa and they were super cheap. They made my skin really soft, and I think they had some effect on evening out the tone and lessening the appearance of old scars.

More recently, I've been getting Dysport injections about twice a year and am very happy with the results. My medspa always does promotions/coupons in December (and a birthday coupon), so you can save a lot by timing it right.

I made an appointment for a consultation the week before Christmas, so we'll see what they say.

So, they cancelled my appointment and I just had the reschedule today. I really liked the lady I met with and I felt that she understood that everyone can't afford their treatments. We discussed how to get the most bang for my buck, which I liked!

My MIL had a laser peel done from these folks and really liked it. She hasn't had the full course of treatments though.

I think I am going to have a procedure. They can get rid of my tiny capillaries in my cheeks and get rid of my sun spot. She figures 3 treatments at $125 each. I think they do a $75 discount for referrals, and mu MIL is one, so I'm on my way! $300 seems reasonable to get rid of one large and two small sun spots and make my cheeks look clearer. The recovery time is nil and she said it isn't painful. So, I'll report back once I have had the procedure and let you know how it goes.

I have an appointment with a regular dermatologist next week to address the things this place can't.

I had laser hair removal a few years ago and I think the key was to have a good connection with the tech. It took more sessions than I was originally quoted to get rid of the hair and she was able to get me a deal on the extra sessions. Basically, it came down to whether it was worth the money to me to get rid of the hair or not (it was and I'm pretty happy with the results.)

Let me know how the procedure goes, if you don't mind. I have some broken capillaries on my nose that I'd love to get rid of.

I will, Boots. I decided I need to lose 10 pounds to 'earn' each treatment so I don't feel so guilty buying them (seems so superficial, but I really want it, so it is a good incentive). So, you'll have to wait for me to bust off 10 pounds. But, I'm aiming for the second half of February. The first 10 will be easy, it's earning the other 2 treatments before summer that will be hard.

Glycolic acid peels every six weeks. My aesthetician uses the highest level of acids (I have worked up to it) and I go every 6 weeks. My derm office has packages and there are special events several times a year. I always buy a package at a discount and get something free. Also heavy sunblock. I tanned alot in my teens and 20 and this really reverses the visual damage.  I am 43 but get carded in bars all of the time and people can't believe I am "so old".

Good incentive!  I don't think it's superficial at all.  Think of it as a confidence boost.  I know that when I'm having a great skin day, it's like I can do no wrong (in my own mindwink)  Good luck on the weight loss.

KBomb- judging from your avatar, I can totally believe that you get carded.  aww You look great!

GD - love the idea of incentivizing your weight loss with cosmetic treatments. I am thinking that might be a idea for me too!

kbomb -- I want to do what you're doing!

I do Botox (although haven't done it in awhile because I am lazy) and I regularly use Retin-A in a very high dosage.

I'd recommend starting Retin-A immediately. It will not only improve your skin, but prevents aging. It's the only topical treatment that is actually proven to reduce wrinkles/improve skin. You do need to use it for awhile before your skin adjusts..so you'll be flakey for about a month.

I have a bunch of retin a and haven't used it in a while. Thanks for the reminder - I should probably dig it out.

Good idea to incentivize.  Has anyone else had exp with the laser hair removal?  Last time I considered it was many years ago, and it was iffy back then as to whether it worked and how effectively.  What's the lowdown nowadays on it?  Thanks!

I talked to them about laser hair removal. My hair is too light for the laser to really catch it. She did note that they have come along way and are doing better. My husband had it done several years ago at a different place, and saw some results. There is less and it is finer, but it is far from gone. It might not hurt to consult with someone about it.

I started back up with the retin a recently too. I remembered why I always quit, it really is drying. I know I need to keep on with it though...

That's my experience too.  I have dark brown hair and had some facial hair I wanted removed from my chin and jaw (so embarrassing.  Inherited, but still embarrassing.)  It's not entirely gone, but it's manageable now.  It's less and finer and most of what grows back is white colored (which is easy enough to quickly remove.)

I was originally quoted 4 to 5 sessions of 3-4 weeks between treatments.  It ultimately took 8 to get the results I wanted.  The Medi spa I used was run by a doctor who did the initial consult but the sessions were done by technicians.  The office constantly had deals going and my tech went out of her way to make sure I got the best price.   I think I spent about $800-$900 total, but it was worth it to me.

There are 2 different types of laser treatments that can be offered and it might be worth doing some research on them before hand.  I started with one type and when my original tech quit, the new girl switched me to a different treatment which worked much better on my hair.  She told me that different people respond differently to each type of removal.

I had my first treatment yesterday! They used AFT Pulsed Light to treat my sun spots and broken capillaries. It took about 45 minutes for the appointment, but the procedure wasn't that long. It did hurt a little, but was tolerable. They descripe it as a rubber band being snapped on your face. That is probably the closes explanation I can come up with too. I had a hose with air conditioning to blow on my face where it stung or got hot. After my cheeks were a little more red than usual, but not bad. I have to sleep on 2 pillows for 2 nights so my face doesn't swell, refrain from facial fronducts with acids for a few days, and avoid the sun for awhile (which I do anyway). It takes a few weeks to see results, so I can't comment on that.

I also asked about botox. I don't have wrinkling yet, and don't want to start. She said it wasn't time for me to start botox treatments yet, so I'm off the hook on that expense for awhile. Yippee!

Hello everyone! I've been a longtime lurker, but now I finally have something to contribute! For those of you interested in laser hair removal, I've had 4 sessions done on my underarms and I'm very pleased with the results. I have very little hair now and it grows slowly and very fine.

I'm Asian, with very fair skin and dark hair. Even after a being freshly shaven, my underarm hair would be visible beneath my skin. I finally decided I was tired of feeling self-conscious and hiding my underarms and began laser hair removal. The sessions cost $125-$150 each and they are spaced about 6 weeks apart. The pain is bearable and I did not need a topical anesthetic. The time commitment is about 40 min for your first visit, including your consultation. Afterwards, each session is less than 20 minutes. Before selecting a place, be sure to do your research. I've had friends who were burnt and scarred by lasers! Call several treatment facilities and ask them who operates the laser (should be a doctor or nurse), what laser is used, and how much experience does the doctor/nurse have with that specific laser. Also ask to see prices and before and after photos from actual patients, not photos provided by other doctors or by the laser companies. My dermatologist's office does laser hair removal and you are required to consult with the doctor before beginning a new treatment. This is to make sure that your skin or health won't be compromised by the treatment. It also ensures that you are matched with the treatment/type of laser that is right for you. One laser does not fit all. The lasers I used were the Sciton and the Candela GentleLASE.
