I know, me too! I hadn't checked the news all weekend and then when I came home today and checked I was stunned to see that the situation looks apocalyptic. I desperately hope it turns aside so the city doesn't get the full brunt. That whole area has such a fascinating history, I hate to think of all of it being destroyed--not to mention the economic damage. All those beautiful old buildings. I feel like crying and the storm hasn't even hit yet.

I'm super freaked out right now. My brother lives there. My father left a message on my machine telling me my brother is staying. I couldn't quite understand what he said - and have no idea if my brother is still there right now. I 'm so worried about him right now. He also just fixed up 5 houses there and am not sure if he has insurance. I just hope he is safe.

This is so terrible and I'm so scared - my friends' parents live in New Orleans. They have evacuated to Texas, but this could be very devasting. Those friends were supposed to move there in January (they are originally from New Orleans). This morning when I left my house, part of the roof had blown off of the Superdome - where 9,000 people were seeking shelter. I really hope this doesn't turn out as horrible as it seems.

OMG!! Why is he staying? I heard today that 80% of the city has evacuated.

Edited: i just noticed the post about the roof blowing off the Superdome! How terrible.

My brother did end up staying. Crazy he is. I just heard that he and his house are doing fine. A tree fell in his street. It's still not over - so I'm hoping for the best for him and his houses.

one of my students' grandparents lives there. He said his grandma left, but his grandpa refused. I hope everyone's friends & family are OK.

The sad thing is that most people don't want to evacuate because of all the looting. It is really sad but true. Hopefully everything will work out but looking at some of the images I am even worried and I'm usually not.

This is really bad. I can't even watch this anymore. Will this place ever be inhabitable again? Where will these people live? How can the government possibly pay for all of these people to have even their basic needs met?

Yeah I am scared for these people. They have nothing. I mean for the people who stayed behind in their houses they are on their roofs waiting to be recused. People lost family members because they drowned right or floated away from them in the water. What are all these people going to do? Where are all of them going to go? I couldn't imagine just being shifted from place to place not knowing what the furture holds. I was thinking today how I hate having to spend so much money on gas and it is even going to go up within the week, but at least I have a car. So what I have to make cut backs but at least I have my house and my belongings and my family. Life doesn't seem so bad anymore, after I watch the news.

did anyone see the interview with the guy (he was an older, African-American man they interviewed on the street) whose wife got swept away right in front of him? She told him to take care of their kids, and she was gone. It was heartbreaking.

Oh God yes. Sooo sad. I watched CNN pretty much all day and he was on quite a bit. The first two times I saw that video I was bawling. When they were about to show it a third time, I had to turn the TV off and just regroup. My husband was asking me to stay away from CNN for a little while. But the despair in his eyes just blew me away. It was actually after that video that I donated $$$ to Red Cross.
