puppy needs positive thoughts
Permalink Closed

Upon trying to make pick up arrangements for the dogs this morning, I was informed the little boy got his left front leg stuck in his crate and is in the hospital on antibiotics waiting for the inflammation to go down so they can stitch him up.  If his leg becomes infected they will amputate it.

Please send positive thoughts, prayers, or whatever you can do to collectively help his healing prospects.

I'm just sick about this, and I just want him to heal, be healthy and be able to keep his leg no

Did they say where he will be held while he is healing? Is he staying with the foster folks or at the vet? I'm sure the foster folks are on top of it, they go through a process to become fosters, so either way I'm sure he is getting the attention he needs to keep it from becoming infected. But, the vet would be more of a restful place since the other pup (or pups) would contribute to his healing (or lack thereof).

How does this affect your decision to adopt him? What about them as a pair? I know you were interested in littermates. Naturally, another set of dogs will come around, but I'm sure you have your heart set on these. And, he will become harder to adopt out I'd imagine, if his leg is amputated. But, you can't base the decision about what is best for you based on his adoptability. How does this affect your husband's thought process?

I will say that when my dog had surgery and had her leg in a cast (and even before the surgery, leading up to it) she got by by only using the 4th leg like a crutch, she barely put any weight on it, and she was unstoppable... didn't slow her down a bit. Losing a leg completely is different that severly limping on one, but my point is he will still play and be a dog. I feel like I've seen 3 legged dogs in news articles and whatnot.

Also, on my pet's second surgery she opened up her own leg I think 3 or 4 times, and we had to keep taking her back to be stitched and get a bigger cone each time and stronger sedetives... The point of the story is she didn't get infected along the way. Hopefully your little man possesses the same luck. I'll ask Mattie to send good dog vibes his way.

So, think happy thoughts and wish for the best. Meanwhile, if you need to talk through the process of adoption again, now that the circumstances have changed, we are here!

GD - sent you a message - thank you for your empathy and support. I want to just focus on him healing, avoiding infection, and recovering.

This is so hard because I feel so emotionally connected to these pups and I haven't even met them yet. I guess it's somewhat similar to adopting children from overseas...

I had a dream last night that featured a little pup that looked just like your little man. And, he was running around on all fours. Let's hope that means his leg will be fine!

YAY! I may not be religious, but I do believe that we share an energy and that "prayer" works.  I'm only thinking positive, healthy thoughts for him, and thank you all for joining me in doing that.  Apparently he's eating, drinking and in good spirits.  I'm going to get a phone call from the rescue lady this morning with an update from the vet.

Has the swelling gone down enough for them to stitch him up?

I just talked to her and asked her that question.  She said that she wasn't sure.  She did say his swelling went down, and explained that they are either going to leave it open for a little longer should there be any infection that can be treated through the open wound or, since there's no sign of infection or fever, just stitch him up.  She'll be giving me another update this evening.

She's really nice and very compassionate.  She told me her vet is very good, and I feel like he's in good hands.  She said if he needs any injectable fluids or antibiotics after he leaves the vet, that she'll take care of that.  I said if it's just a matter of oral antibiotics and wound care, that I could do that.

I also told her about all of us sending good vibes and told her about your dream, gd wink
