I'm desperately in love with thus coat. Anyone who's seen it in person knows that this picture does not do it justice... Sorry for all the huge pics, I just couldn't choose less. Anyway, I love it and it feels warm enough, but at $395 it's pretty expensive for me. I have the money right now, but do you think it's worth it? Will I love it next year and the year after?
I think it's a great coat...I haven't seen it IRL, but I've had good luck in the past w/ JCrew coats. In a cold climate, I think you will get a decent cost per wearing. Will you get sick of it?...not sure, I find that I can usually update the look of my coats each season w/ new gloves or a scarf or hat which helps.
In the past JCrew used to offer 20% off coats but not usually until Nov or Dec...don't know if you could hold out until then...although they have been pretty tight with discounts lately...
I really like the coat, but I feel like the tweed coat is relatively easy to find cheaper. However, I think you will get a lot of wear out of it if you
a. live in the north and
b.wear nice clothes (like work clothes) daily.
I would suspect that if you weren't in business type clothing everyday, you might not wear it as much.
It's a nice coat, and if you love it, that means a lot.
However, I had a horrible experience with a JCrew coat, and don't trust their quality at all. I bought a basic peacoat in January. I wore it for the rest of the winter (New England winter), alternating with another coat. So that's about 1/4 of a season. By May, it was threadbare and the lining and started to tear in places. And I had to resew the buttons.
Along with that negative, I want to make a recommendation: the other coat, which I wore almost all the time for 2 more seasons, still looks amazing inside and out. It's from LaRedoute, and cost about 1/3 - 1/2 of the J Crew one. They certainly wouldn't have the exact same coat, but I've seen cute ones in their catalogue and trust them a lot more.
Alternatively, if you're thinking of something in the $300 range, you could get one from Banana Republic.
For what it's worth, I have a JCrew coat that I've had since my senior year of high school (1999) and it still looks as great today as it did back then. And I wear it a LOT in the winter. JCrew coats are well made and the coat you picked out will last forever. Plus, the color, shape, and style of it just has "classic" written all over it, so I think you'd wear it for a few years. $395 is a lot of money, but that's not too bad a price for a coat. Plus, it's still only August, so you could hold off for awhile and come back to it if you still really like it.
Its a pretty coat, but $395 is a lot of money. I'd look for a cheaper version, and if nothing catches your fancy then go for it (maybe wait for a code or sale).
Most J. Crew jackets are pretty good quality, I've never seen them so expensive though!
i like it. i think it's a relatively classic style with enough detail to keep it from being boring. plus the hood will come in handy. i say get it. of late, i've found that it's not worth it waiting around for j.crew sales b/c stuff either sells out or is on backorder. since j.crew has a good return policy i'd just save the receipt and return it if a code pops up.
i agree w/honey. if you love it, no sense waiting because it might not be available later. it's really nice that it has a hood and yet is still dressy/long enough to wear with a lot of different things. i like it a lot.
