That really is very sad. I can't believe someone would not only drive off without paying, but then kill for gas. These are scary times we're living in because you can never judge the reaction of a human being (in any situation really) and simply standing up for yourself could result in violence and death. It's all really very grim.

I don't know if I'm alone here or not, but it scares me so much to think of the state this country (and the world for that matter) is in right now. Everything is unknown and nobody seems to know what to do to fix it. I just hate it because things are never going to be like used to.

i have to admit to being a little confused though--i've never not had to prepay for gas so i was confused that in other parts of the country you can fill up first and then pay? how does that work? usually, i have to stick in my debit/credit or go pay cash in the store, come out to fill up and then leave. is that different from what you all are accustomed to?

Where I live, most gas stations allow you to prepay, and some let you pump first then pay. I've heard that it all has to do with how many drive-offs that certan station has had... but I don't know for sure. I work in a little coffee shop inside a gas station (that probably sounds a little strange) and they allow people to pump first then pay, although the owners have security cameras set up so that they can see the license plate numbers incase they try to drive off. The gas station across the street also lets people pump first then pay, but they do not have cameras set up (or at least, they've said that they don't). Maybe they don't make us prepay because we're not a huge city with a lot of people. I mean, we're the second biggest city in the state, but it's Rhode Island so that doesn't say much... anyway, outside my state, I've always had to prepay, so maybe it's just us...

In NJ, we have full service pumps, so we don't pump our own gas. Most of the time here we pay after the fact.

I have used my debit card for so many years for this that i was a little clueless...but when my mom came to visit me she gave me some cash to fill up my car, so I went to pump & was practically laughed at. Apparently everyone but me knew that you had to pay first. So i'm surprised this isn't actually everywhere?

no, not at all. i live in CA (like esquiress) and i dimly remember as a small child asking to be the one to carry the cash into the gas station to pay while one of my parents pumped the gas, but even back then, the cash had to get there first before they'd turn the pump on.

i also remember the first time seeing in a movie (or maybe it was "the a team" or something) a car drive off from a gas station after filling up and not paying, and totally not understanding how that could happen.

there are still some gas stations around here you can pay afterwards, but i am sure that is quickly changing.
