One other thing to consider, if you care about being environmentally / health conscious, is to use low-VOC paints. Here's a link to some good information about them:
As the article notes, they do tend to be a bit pricier. We actually used a low-VOC paint from Sears (they have a line of paint for children's rooms and such) that was more reasonable. It diid take a bit longer to dry, but finished nicely, and my dad and husband were so happy that there was no harsh smell while they were painting. Score one for the "green girl" of the family! *s*
