Yup. That rule doesn't need to be followed any more. To me, the type of fabric is a more important consideration than the color. And, as long as it's warm, and you help make the transition with appropriate accessories, you should be good to go.

For me, it's how you style it - a white dress with maybe some carmel colored boots and even a leather jacket, or army jacket could totally look like fall

I mostly stick with the rule, except for some white tops. Truly white-whites I find too jarringly bright for the filtery, more golden light of fall and winter. But otherwise I agree that the weight of the fabric and maybe even style matters more - something too sundressy wouldn't be right, but a tailored sheath could be transitional.

ITA - they say it's fine and old fashioned but most white items aren't really translating into fall/winter weather. Even accessories. If you can make it work, sure but I tend to stay safe and stash my whites. I can't imagine these looks being cute in September. That might just be me though.

I would wear both of those dresses with boots/booties in the early Fall (September and maybe early October.)

And switch out the white belt for a richer looking one.

And carry a darker bag too.

I agree with Boots. However, it depends on wear you live too. In So Cal it will stay warm through November so sweaters aren't even an option yet.

Plus, I think it's fun to flaunt the rules on purpose sometimes, just because it can be unexpected and fresh. I've totally worn white jeans (styled like Boots suggestions) into October just for fun and loved it

I wear white blouses year-round. I also like to wear off-white heavier fabrics in the winter too. I'm also a fan of putting a lightweight white top under a fluffy cream sweater or cardigan. I love the white and cream combo.

I love in South Alabama and we wear white and shorts up to December, but that is mostly to keep from suffocating from the humidity cry

Same topic, new rule: I have a great navy blue dress with white stripes that I never know what color shoes to wear with it. I don't own blue shoes so it is between brown or black. Any thoughts?

If my only two choices are brown/black, I vote brown. But other colors that would work better would be gray, white, red, burgundy, taupe/tan/nude, or perhaps pink.

Even if you got navy shoes, what are the odds they would match? There are way too many shades of navy.

I think of the choices, either brown or black would be fine. I would not do navy or blue sinply because it feels too matchy matchy for me. I think nude, red, yellow or grey might be other options to try.

I would go red, nude or a gray.

I can't bring myself to mix navy and black. Maybe this is ok but for whatever reason it feels like a huge no-no to me.

I have an ex-coworker who wore black knee-highs with navy capris and it drove me nuts! to this day I cannot look at the color combo without thinking about that lady (who was one of the strangest people I have ever met!). So, to me, black and navy are a big no-no. Any single color would be better.

I think black and navy can look very chic together (like the examples Xtina posted.) But I think the key is the shade of blue and to make the pairing look deliberate. A midnight navy so dark that it's almost black will not look good with black because it will give off the impression that you got dressed in the dark. A truer blue navy is better with black.
