It appears that Pride & Prejudice won in the book club vote, so that's what we'll be reading. Please respond if you are "in", get yourself a copy, and let's start reading. I have no clue as to how to do this, if ya'll (sorry, I am from the south & don't know the other forms of plural "you"s!) want a thought provoking question list, do we just say read X number of chapters then comment, read at your own pace but have an ongoing thread? I'm sure i could find a list of questions just to get us thinking about the same type of issue or to make people like me think about it more than I normally would - we may even have teachers or involved members that have such a list or know where to find one??? hint hint. I guess I could also buy cliff notes or something similar too!
Also, if you've already read this book & want to be involved in the discussions, please feel free to jump in & comment - we want everyone's thoughts & everyone to be included.
Any suggestions on how to move forward are welcome & appreciated.... Not to be the ring leader, but I guess someone needs to be, and since I'm home all day, I have time to "organize" if that becomes necessary!

I like the idea of the ongoing thread. But then maybe we could have a seperate thread for specific topics. Hmmmm. I am sure something will develop that is clever and witty etc.. Happy reading everyone!!
laken1- I just realized our posts in the other thread were at the same time. Woo woo woo(eerie music) And yes great minds do think alike!
I'm in too. I agree with Nyla, about reading a few chapters a week and talk about it on maybe Friday AM or something. That way no one accidentaly reads what happens in the book.
I'm in. I have to buy the book today. Maybe we should read a certain number of chapters a week and then discuss it by week's end.
I agree- this way no one gets too far ahead or behind. Once we all have the book, we should look to see if we can agree on a reasonable amount of reading for each week (depending on how long the chapters are and such)? I'm sure we can find tons of study guide type questions to help lead the discussion as well.
I'm with gruiz - time constraints are my biggest issue (and this is my slow time of year!). But - I already have this book, and read it...long ago, so this will be a good refresher for me. *s*

I want you girls to know that Mr. Darcy was my teen idol. Everybody else was in love with Luke Perry, and I was in love with Darcy...sigh...
For me, it's always been Mr. Knightley. Dreeaaamy.
I'm going to pass on this go 'round of the book club, just b/c I've read P&P a billion times, and I'm in the middle of War & Peace, but count me in for next time!

ooohhh, I agree! I don't care if he was old - man is he ever swoon worthy.
Oh, and I'm in for the book club. I agree with the suggestions to read a certain number of chapters before week's end and discuss on Friday. Since it's almost Tuesday, should we say 5 chapters? Does that sound like too many or too few? I'm guessing here b/c I'm too lazy to go get my book from upstairs and see what a good first week stopping point would be.

I'm sorry. I read that book one summer when I worked as a receptionist - it didn't take the whole summer or anything but you know - because I read somewhere it was "the best book ever written." I'm saying this as a complete Tolstoy and Russian literature fan, BULLSHIT! The war scenes alone drove me to want to actually answer phones instead of read, if you can imagine such a thing. I started skimming over some of the more detailed battles about halfway through. What are you thinking about it?

Well, Anna Karenina is definitely in my top 5, so W&P is disappointing b/c I don't think it's nearly as good. I've read it twice ... up to the last 100 pages. UGh. This time I am determined to press through and actually finish the d*** thing.
Like you, the war scenes are not my favorite. But I like Prince Bolkonsy, so I can hack the ones he is in. Little Rostov bugs the crap out of me, though. I infinitely prefer the "St. Petersberg society" scenes, but overall I agree that they can't make up for the interminable war parts. So yeah. I'm ready to be done.

I am excited that so many of us are in this!! I have tossed aside my "real life" book club in favor of this one. I am starting the book today. I have already read it but it is one that deserves re-reading and discussion!!
Regarding War and Peace- I picked up a copy not to long ago to have on hand, I know I will read it some day. But should I read Anna K first?

You are all going to love P&P, I think! (<<Note shameless attempt to disguise thread hijack)
I would recommend reading Anna K first, just b/c I think it's easier to appreciate W&P if you already have a love (which I'm sure reading Anna K will create) for Tolstoy. Blubirde, what do you think?

This made me laugh out loud. I just wanted to add a comment that all of the above books are available in the Barnes & Noble collection series, both paper back (4.95) or hard back ($7.95). So I think that's pretty reasonable & won't cause any major budget issues - even for people on a ban. Although there is always the free option of the library. But I'll want to scrible in mine I'm sure!!!
5 chapters is only 20 pages in my book, so i think that's more than fair, although there is a pretty long intro to Jane Austen in general. If you disagree, let me know.

I have purchased almost all of my "classic" novels as well as more modern ones at second hand bookstores and various annual book sales. So maybe that might be an option as well. There always seems to be a ton of classics at my local used bookstore but that may be attributed to the university nearby, where everyone dumps their Dickens and such after reading them for their courses. Seems heinous to me.........
Thanks for the suggestion Lisa(and shameless hijack). After P+P I am going to read Of Human Bondage because it was discussed here not long ago and I was intrigued, have read other Maugham books and loved them, and then I may pick up AnnaK.
