I've been working for University of California since November 2003. I worked in two 50% positions, editorial assistant and library assistant, for a little over a year. I started working full time at the library in February. I regret changing from the two jobs to one, because my full-time job has ended up being quite boring and an unpleasant place to work for numerous reasons. I was expecting more from this job and have been let down.
I've been looking around campus at other jobs and have seen some that I would like to apply to.
Here's the catch. I really want to participate in the JET program next summer. The JET program is teaching English in Japan but its a structured program through the Japanese government and the application process is as intense as applying to college (essays, transcripts, letters of rec, long process).
I'm worried if I change jobs that it will look like I'm a job hopper on my resume, especially considering that I know I want to go to another job (JET) in July 2006.
Does this make sense? or am I worrying about something silly?
sorry i can't keep track, but are you a student doing workstudy or are you just working for the college cuz that's what job you found? if you are a student, can you just work for the library through the end of summer & then move on to a new job in fall semester? i think that looks okay because a lot of workstudy jobs are just temporary anyways and maybe you could note that the other job fit with your class schedule better or something.
if you are not a student, how long have you been working for the library? if it's over a year i think u r okay to switch to a new job & then u will be at that job for almost a year so that looks fine. hope this info helps/makes sense!!
I'm not a student, but a staff member. I've been at the library over a year all together, but in this position since February.
Its not as complicated as I make it out to be. I just want to look good for the program I'm applying to - but don't want to stay at my current job unless it would look really bad on my resume.
I think you should be ok. On your resume your time in the library will all be grouped together and if you get another campus job you will have a grouping of UC positions so I don't think that will look as scattered as if you had 3 different jobs in 3 different companies.
Good luck! Japan is so awesome and if I weren't so attached to my life here I would love to do a program like JET.
