diet desserts

So I have a serious addiction... no, not drugs-- but sweets. My problem is that I can't have just a moderate portion of a sweet snack. It's a lot easier for me to not have any cookies than to have just one or two. But I'm trying to stick to a low carb diet, I really believe that low-carbs will help keep your belly from getting big. Now my question is, are those low carb, sugar free (even sometimes carb free) desserts okay to have? I'm the type that needs to have sweets at least once a day, and i used to have a bunch of cookies with milk, or half a pint of icecream.

I realize that replacing these things with sugar free or carb free cookies (i found these really yummy carb free biscotti!) and sugar free pudding and jello is definetly a lot better for me, but are these seemingly-good desserts going to make me gain wieght? Even though I'm not eating sugar or much carbs, do you think these desserts will still make me get bigger if eaten everyday? Or do you think I should somehow try to ween myself off sugar, tough it out and not eat any sweet snacks? I just don't think I'll be able to handle a middle ground. I don't think that I would have the will power to just have alittle bit of dessert. For me, it kinda has to be all or nothing.

instead of all or nothing, why not buy cookies that are prepackaged into set serving sizes?

this is a really great idea! I buy these in order to "control" that craving without overdoing it.  You get to eat a bunch of little cookies at 100 calories a bag as opposed to 1 or 2 cookies.

I like light yogurts when I want a low-cal dessert.  Last night I had a new one... Yoplait Chocolate Raspberry Mousse.  Wasn't fat-free, though.  180 calories.  A lot less than a handful of cookies, though, and very tasty.  I just love all kinds of yogurt.  It usually satisfies the craving for me.

If you're wondering if something will make you gain weight, just check the amount of calories.  If something is sugar free, but still loaded with fat, you're going to still have a bunch of calories.  And if something is fat free, but loaded up with sugar, then you're still going to get a bunch of calories.  And if you're not good at portion control, then you're going to have a hard time.

I also like the idea of pre-measured packs.  The 100 calorie snack packs are great, but you can also get little Jello pudding cups that are fat and sugar-free and have like 60 calories--not bad.  I'm also hooked on Splenda popsicles and fudgesicles--they are like 20-30 calories a piece and taste great.

I think ultimately if you want to lose weight and keep it off, you're going to have to make yourself watch your portions, otherwise it's not going to work very well.  Chances are you won't be able to avoid fat and sugar forever, so you might as well learn how to enjoy some of it without eating everything in sight.  Investing in some nutrition books might also help you get a good understanding of how diet, exercise, and lifestyle in general all work together to help you maintain your weight once you've reached your goal weight.

i am addicted to sweets too. i find when i'm craving cake, nothing cuts it but real cake. i think the key is learning to control yourself and not indulging too often. i might have a cupcake twice month for example.

and with some desserts, i've come to like the lower calorie alternative. i buy Edy's sugar-free low fat vanilla ice-cream and maybe mix it with a tablespoon of real hot fudge. i also love fat-free cool whip.

i also like fruit too, but you still have to watch calories even with fruit.

You guys are right, I guess portion control is really something that will keep wieght off long term. But I have a serious problem with it, how do you guys handle portion control? Is it something you just have to practice and eventually you get so used to it that it doesnt become hard anymore?

I guess I'm really gluttonous with food, which I know is terrible-- not just for my diet, but just in general, gluttony is technically a sin, lol.

Maybe I should just train myself to have portion control. Is there any way to teach yourself this? I would definetly appreciate some advice on how to get to a lifestyle where I can eat just to satisfy my hunger, instead of eating until im so full that I have to unbutton my pant a la homer simpson, lol.

I try to not eat too much sugar because I have a serious addiction to it and I'm scared my teeth are going to rot!  So I try to have higher fat than simply high sugar- like a small piece of cake over a box of Mike and Ikes.  The fat in it makes it more filling and satisfying.  I think portion control is your best bet.  I made magnolia cupcakes from scratch from the magnolia cookbook (makes about 48!!), but gave them most of them away (12 to my family, some to work, some to my roomies, some to my friends, some to my bf, and some to me).  It made everyone happy and I didn't feel like I had to figure out how to eat so many cupcakes.  Maybe buy those baby cupcakes from the grocery store and share them?  That's the easiest way to limit portions for me- make sure my friends help me with my desserts.
