I think it would look good with red in a few other places, so I say yes go for red pillows etc!

I wouldn't mind seeing red in a lamp on the nightstand, or some art on the walls with some red. I don't know that I'd use too much of it though. I think I'd like it as a suprising punch of color rather than integrated everywhere.

I am going to slipcover a couple of ottomans. Maybe a tiny red detail in a button above a tuft or something.

Right now, I'm torn over how much of the rug should be exposed around the bed. One size has the rug covering most of the floor in the room, and the other size would have the border running around the bed, but would provide something to step on getting in and out of bed... Any rules of thumb for this that anyone is aware of?

I agree. Maybe some place unexpected? Just a few pops scattered around the room to echo back to the rug.

I swear I once heard someone on a design show say that a rug should come within 12-18 inches of the walls. I remember thinking how could anyone afford to rug their house, and why do they then sell 5x7 rugs? That's too big to be a spot rug, like for a landing, and too small for any room.

I'd go with the larger. You don't want to hide such a pretty rug under the bed.

I'd go with the larger size versus the smaller, but mark it out on the floor with masking tape to make sure it won't overwhelm.

Red sheets would be hot with that. When the bed is made you'd hardly see them, but when it's unmade...bow chicka bow bow. But I agree with using it as a "punchy" accent, and keeping it eclectic.

this bedroom is weird. I't kind of small and square, there's a closet in each corner, and there's a window on 3 walls, two of which are inset between closets. It's probably a third of the size of my current bedroom. The larger carpet just about meets the closets on either side, and only leaves a foot strip on the other two sides (under headboard and along opposite wall.) the floor space for a rug is approx 13.5' by 11.5'. My rug dimension size options are 8x10 or 9.5x13.5. I have room for my huge mahogany four poster bed and two small night stands, two ottomans (one on each side of opposite window to the bed) and a mirror hanging over each ottoman. No room for artwork - I gave it up for dressing mirror needs.

This is obviously a before photo -- it's the only one I have handy at the moment, but it gives you a general idea of what i'm working with -- just mirror what you see to the other side. The headboard is against a wall flanked by two doors - one to hallway and one to bath. I want it to be a plush little cozy sleeping chamber...

Fun project! I'd definitely add more red, not over do it, although. Also, i'd suggest deep red (bordeaux), not bright red - goes more with the traditional decor. I'd add some sparkle - mirrored piece of furniture or is there a place for a mirror on the wall? Sparkly throw pillow. What about lighting?

OMG, it just occured to me - those are the colors of my bedroom, the curtains are of that bottle green/grey dupioni silk ( solid color), the walls are a bit more peachy then that camel that you have in curtain stripe. So, yes, I brought in red - red quilted bed cover, deep red, almost merlot red. Furniture - dk. espresso. Looks good, revives the room.

Then I don't see how the largest size could possibly work. The 8x10 leaves you a little less than 2 feet all around the perimiter. You can also cheat a little bit on the part that's under the bed. E.g. maybe put it 3 feet from the headboard wall so you see a bit more of it.

just for clarification, you think it would look stupid coming right up to the closets? my instincts tell me this, but I was hoping for more carpet coverage than the 8x10 provides... the window "insets" between the closets on either side of the room will not have a rug, if that makes any difference...

I do have the option of just getting two runners, but I'm not as fond of the idea. That or two little ones just for stepping in and out of bed.

Your floors are beautiful, i wouldn't close that much of the hardwood. I also think that area rug that reaches the wall or in this case comes that close to the closet doors will look disproportionate. Then, i suggest to go with the next smaller option. Wouldn't use 2 runners either if you're after traditional grand look.

I've reconsidered, and I'm now voting for the smaller of the two rugs.

thanks for your input, Yana and Greendiamond. I think I'm going to go with the smaller rug. Not digging the idea of the runners or smaller rugs either...

I thought about a round rug too, but I'm in love with this rug...

ETA -- I just found it in 8'9" x 11'9" woot! for some reason the description is different than the other sizes, but it came up as a suggestion when I went to order the 8x10. This should work perfectly!

How are you holding it to gether with all the remodeling and redecorating? It's always a fun as it is frusterating.... I bet it makes for a long summer though!

barely! a last straw was the plumber knocking ceiling to floor holes in my kitchen walls to fix a plumbing leak yesterday.... I am in dire need of a vacation.
