Hair extensions questions

I have red streaks in my hair, and they're basically getting to be a waste of my money because they fade so fast. I'm doing everything I can but they look gross and faded more often than they look awesome. Last night I went to get my hair done and my stylist had some bright pink streaks that were extensions. She said she likes them because they don't fade like it does when you dye your real hair a bright color. I don't know anything about extensions but when she lifted up the top layer of hair, I could see what looked like a ball of hot glue holding the extension to her real hair. So now I'm thinking about getting them myself, but I have a couple questions for anyone who has had them.

How often do you have to get them redone?

If you have that little ball of bonding glue or whatever, can you still put your hair in ponytails or does it all show when you put your hair up?

How hard are they to care for? My stylist mentioned that she can't brush them the way she normally does, or something?

When you get tired of them and take them out, is your hair left totally wrecked and broken?

It's i n your hair dresser's best interest to have nice looking hair. So, if she is willing to wear them, they can't be too bad for your hair.

An ex-coworker of mine had extensions and had to be very careful with them, but she had a full head of them. I think just a few would be doable. I think you have to be cautions when shampooing and styling but should be able to style it like your own hair.
