What do you do with outfits you like in magazines? I don't have a lot of space for 1000 magazines, if they are older than a year I toss 'em, but now that I am more style oriented, I have some stickies on outfits that I liked & may want to try. Do you keep the entire magazine, or tear out the page? How do you organize the pages of outfits you like? Do you have a cute binder or bulletin board?
OMG-I am such a dork about this! I cut out pictures of outfits I like and paste them in a little blank book that is small enough that I can carry with me in my purse when I go shopping. That way if there's an outfit I like and I have most of the components, I can see what else I need to get in order to make the outfit work.
I also have a bulletin board in my closet and I put pictures up there as well for "inspiration" in the morning. Then when I'm sick of those pics, I paste them in the little book.
Once I've combed through a magazine a few times and pulled all the pics I like, then I pitch it. I keep my InStyle magazines for about a year or two though because I love to go back and read the articles and try the recipes and stuff. Lucky magazines I usually toss after 2-3 months.
let me first off say that i'm a dork. i'm super organized. i have a spreadsheet for
shopping
gifts that i want to get people (you know how during the year you think, "hey that would be a great gift for so and so when it's their b-day")
for working out
music that i want to download
make up that i use that the label rubs off and then i'm like, "what was that color again?".
you get the point...
so with magazines i take the pictures and put them in the clear plastic sheets and stick them in a binder. i have a section for:
outfits
beauty
fitness
local (like those "directory pages", or cool shopping in random cities...i used it for dallas/austin recently
recipes/party ideas (instyle always has a party theme section)
diet ("you could eat this, or all of this", calories in certain foods, etc...
home/garden (rooms i like, interior design)
random articles i liked (one that comes to mind was freezing your eggs)
i think that's it. like i said, i'm a dork. but one binder takes up less space than a pile of magazines. although i had to make a special binder for fitness since i had a ton of exercises that looked good (yes, i categorized those into legs, arms, abs, etc...with dividers too. )
HTH!

This is a great idea! I love it.
I have every single Lucky magazine ever published, but all other mags, I only keep around for a few months. Before I throw them away, I go through them and rip out the pages I like, then I file them plastic sleeves and put them in 3 ring binders. I used to have a bullentin board, too, but since I'm moving soon, I packed it away.
I do the binder thing also, except I'm not organized about it. I just rip out the pages I like, 3-hole punch them, and put them into binders. No order whatsoever, but I kind of like the randomness
Add me to the DORK club (LOL), b/c if I see an article w/a cute outfit, or a beauty product I want to try, I tear the page out, then I put it in either my "fashion articles" manilla folder, or my "beauty articles" manilla folder, and keep them in a white binder. LOL I also have a 'beauty products to try' spreadsheet in MS Word, for the things I may want to 'try' one day. LOL Glad I'm not the only one who does this! LOL

hahaha. i swear i'm not as anal as i seem. my mom was the queen of lists and always had filing systems for magazine tear outs too. i guess when you're in a profession that you have to document everything and it can all be used against you in court, you always want information at hand!

I'm a dork too - I cut out outfits / pieces / shoes / jewelry that I like & put them in a sticky photo album. I try to include the description because for classic or expensive pieces, I hope to be able to find them on ebay the next season - maybe, i haven't tried it yet. I also have one of these books for beauty products & hair styles - althought that changes very often & i can't keep up with it.

I think you are my organizational twin! You've also inspired me to new heights (a spreadsheet for music to download is one I don't have going ...)
Oh, and to answer the question: I use the binder system as well. I'm in the process of categorizing into "looks." I'm thinking about using celebrities that exemplify the style. Like an SJP section, a Jessica Simpson section, etc. Not that they would be pics of those people, just as a way to categorize the styles.

I like the 'music to download' spreadsheet as well. I love spreadsheets!!
I like the style categorization as well. It narrows the list down even further, which is a godsend for the uber-organized, like myself.
if i really like most of the magazine, i will keep it and refer to it on occasion. if i've definitely gotten done with the mag and there's only a few things worth saving, i will clip out articles (usually fashion or beauty) and save those in a binder. i also save outfits i like in a separate binder. a few years ago, i put together a mini-booklet (with some clippings over 10 years old) and xeroxed a bunch of copies, very zine-style, and called it the "glamourette" (like the benefit one!) and gave it to clients that i knew would appreciate it. (i am a hairstylist) i mostly kept it beauty oriented, but it also had timeless fashion tips and some travel items! they seemed to like it.
Thanks everyone, I think I'm going to try the binder option a la shopgirl82 or imitate it (I dont think I can keep up) I've always wanted a bulletin board ever since I watched that episode of Clean House w/the cluttered closet "room" of a fashionista. I'm hitting the back to school sales for binders & a cute bulletin board.

AHHHH, don't say that! I LOVE back to school supplies - i had to put them on my shopping ban because i go insane - I love a good notebook with clean pages & new pencils to sharpen - i'm such a freak!!
I'd love to see that clean house - was it a recent episode? I love that show

No it wasn't, I saw it a few months ago, the one on Style Network and Niecy Nash as the host (love her). The girl had converted a room into her office/closet and had load of designer pieces, but had no organization at all. Well, she refused to sell her high end stuff @ a garage sale & they ended up placing ads that specified it wasn't a regular garage sale but more of a 'fashionista clean out sale'.
Anyway she had this huge bulletin board next to a body form/mannequin where she pinned mag pics & I thought it was a cute idea.
Too bad I moved & my cable co.(DirectTV) doesn't have Style, it was my fav. channel
I use binders too. I am on my 4th fashion one - one is a how to - like when InStyle has tips about stuff (like a drycleaning kit, for example), one is examples of outfits I like and want to try and duplicate, and one is for those things I see that are just so stunningly beautiful (couture dresses, etc) that I can't bear to toss the pic with the rest of the magazine.
I also have folders (not in binders) for beauty, health, exercise, and one called "books-movies-music" that I want to read/see/hear.

Hahahaha! And I thought I was the only one who would ever do this. Some of you take it further than I do! I cut the pictures out very nicely and I have plastic baggies that I put them into. I have a baggie for each type of item: tops, bottoms, shoes, coats and jackets, jewelry and watches, handbags, skirts and dresses, then a misc bag for pictures of cool boutiques, cars, and ideas. When I'm bored and don't have money to go shopping, I go "shopping" in my baggies! I then toss out the items I don't care for anymore, and review pictures of items I would like to buy when I have money. Sometimes I make outfits of the little pictures.
