anyone have one? Or is there something better for the car? I feel like a geek driving with my headphones on.

**Update: OK, so my dad gave me a Belkin (?) brand mp3 transmitter he doesn't use (he bought one that charges/plays at the same time). It has 4 settings (88.1/88.5/88.7/88.9),but doesn't really work that well...it goes in and out and only works when it's on my lap (we have some very vigorous Spanish stations on that section of the dial).

Is the iTrip (Apple's version) any better? Or will it work this way, too?

I have itrip.  I got it at Best Buy.  It works really well and was more reasonably priced than anything else out there.  One thing to remember is that iTrip runs your batteries down quicker than with just headphones.  I definitely recommend it though.

Just FYI--its illegal to drive with headphones on.  My husband got a ticket for it once and he had no idea it was illegal.  Just thought I'd let you know--don't want you to get pulled over!

I have iTrip for my mini and I love it! Seriously, greatest thing ever invented. I used it on my vacation (11 hours of driving ) and it was wonderful. I really like the fact that it "remembers" what radio station you had it tuned to, so if you turn off your car and then back on, all you have to do is hit play on your iPod and it starts right back up; no re-tuning it.

Plus, what's better than having thousands of songs in one device and not having to mess around with CD's?

I do agree with HeatherLynn too about the battery, so I'd recommend getting the car charger for your iPod too.

I have issues with it becasue I can never get a clear signal. No matter how many stations I try, I just can't get it to sound good!! I've even tried multiple locations in my truck and it still sucks. I'm actually thinking about being ghetto and getting the tape player conversion thingy majiggy. Any other suggestions?

I agree with this 100%- I've considered the tape player thing too! I always get interference, or it'll play good for a minute, but then that station won't be good anymore... Might be better if you're not in a city? I find the whole thing really frustrating though- I have to change the station every 5 seconds.

MY BF has one that we use in his car. We've never had a problem with it despite the fact that we live in Los Angeles. We use 89.5 FM and the signal is always nice and clear.

THE iTRIP SUCKS! Really, HB, do not get it. It's never clear and you can only turn it up a little bit for it to be somewhat clear. I mean, these are songs I paid $.99 for and I want to turn them up and rock out but you can't with an itrip because it sucks. I was so excited when I got it then so disappointed.

Just a Q:  Were you turning up the volume on the iPod itself, or the car stereo volume knob?

Its weird so many girls have had problems with it.  I have used in cities and never had a problem with it.  I use 89.5 which is the preprogrammed channel.

I just wanted to share what i do about volume.  Mine gets as loud as my stereo.  I have never had volume problems.  I read the manual and it said to leave the ipod volume at 3/4 of the way and then adjust the stereo.  I do sometimes adjust the ipod volume to get better sound.

HeatherLynn: That's exactly why I was asking about the what volume she was adjusting
You definitely cannot have it louder than the iTrip manual says because it WILL distort the sound and make it sound fuzzy.

I accidentally made my iPod louder once and was trying to figure out why was coming through fuzzy when I realized what I had done. Adjusting the volume on the iPod to the correct setting cleared it right up.

Thank you guys for your help! I can't say I am really convinced one way or another, though. I am not a hardcore music fan -- my factory speakers work fine for me, so I don't think the sound quality is too much of an issue. Does anyone know if Apple will let me buy one, and then return it if I try it for a few weeks & it doesn't work?

Oh, and I do know it's illegal to drive with headphones, since my dad reminds me every time he sees me. They're just earbuds, though, so I don't think anyone will pull me over. I appreciate your concern for my citizenship, LOL

from my experience, the people at the actual apple store have been great, and they have a 2 week return policy, used or not.  maybe go in and they can give you a better idea of what you need?

Love it. Highly recommend it. The price is very reasonable as well.

iTrip is definitely better. It has stations from 87.9 to 107.9, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding an empty one. I haven't had any problems with it going in and out, except for when I'm out of the actual station range (obviously ).

Yeah, itt's a wireless FM transmittor. It just plugs into the top of your iPod and you have to find a dead station on your car stereo to sync it up with. After that, you get to listen to your iPod through your car! I love it, 988 songs, all in one spot, no CD's to mess around with.

ahah!  thanks CarrieS for the info!  i actually have a MINI so i have the IPod adaptor that MINIs and BMWs are able to come with... and no worrying about trying to find a dead station while traveling!
