Closet remodel...

We are getting custom closets put in and honestly - I feel a little lost.  Does anyone have any recommendations and/or experience?
I got the first draft of the design back and while it looks functional I don't think I like it.  For sure I don't want shoe cubes so that will be x'd out right away.
Input anyone?

I don't like shoe cubes either - I'd personally go with tilted shelves for shoe storage.

Otherwise, it depends on your particular wardrobe and clothes storage preferences.  If you have alot of dresses, or suits, or button-downs you're going to need more hanging space (half-height and full-height).  If you mostly have jeans and tees that can be folded but alot of shoes, your going to want more shelving.

Are you going to need drawers for underthings or tights/socks or jewelry?  Scarf storage?  Belts?  Boots?

Take an inventory of the items you'd want to store and make sure that your closet will accomodate that, with room to grow if possible.  And, if you can, make sure that some areas can do double duty or be used for other items in the future if necessary.

I have a couple pictures saved of some loverly closets I've seen online:

When we customized our closet, I did a clothing assessment. I hang 90% of my clothes, so I needed more rods than drawers. I don't have a ton of long hanging clothes, so I did double rods. I wanted shelves for handbags and shoes, and a space for boots.

It was amazing how it came together after I figured out those main things.

I have no advice, as my biggest closet set up was a walk-in. Am so jealous. I would do tons of research and really think about it first.

Here's the elfa section of Container store to give you ideas:

If I were you, I'd add a special section for jewelry/handbags/accessories.
Lonny Mag featured a little vanity nook that was made from Ikea parts - it is to die for. http://issuu.com/lonnymag/docs/lonny_issue_three/20

I'm completely jealous too. I can only store one season in my closet at a time.

I think taking an inventory of your items is a good idea too. Plus, I'd think about what items you use more than others. If you wear boots for 9 months out of the year and heels only 3 months, I'd try t make the units holding the boots more accessible.

I love that first photo that Elle posted. The glass windows look to clean, yet contained.
