What should I do? Please help!

Recently at work I threatened (in a nice way) to leave if I was not paid anymore. I am already underpaid for what I produce and the extreme hard work I put in, and I was told I would get more money eventually but nothing ever came of it. So my store manager told me she would make some phone calls etc and I also contacted my other boss to let her know what was going on. She told me to be patient and she would get something worked out. So I decide to wait it out figuring that they wouldn't be dumb enough to lose a valuable employee. I kept hearing from like my direct manager that the only way they can justify giving me more money is because I've been newly appointed assistant manager. Whatever. My boss comes into town and has meetings and all the girls I work with were asked to see the HR manager. Turns out that everyone got a raise (hmm how was that justified since I'm the only one that got a promotion? although yes I do agree everyone needed a raise, I don't like being lied to.) Regardless, the girl who has the same job I used to before I got the promotion received almost as much as I did. Of course I didn't ask her what she got but I figured it out because she was "really happy", and then today she was figuring out how much more she would make a year and so basically I figured out what she got. What bothers me is that I only received 50 cents more than her, yet it's not really 50 cents more b/c I got a whopping 12 cent raise in my last review...that's how bad my department is prorated, oh and that raise was the 2nd highest in the department! Go figure. So really it's only like 38 cents more. Ok so am I wrong for being upset that I'm only getting paid that much more when I am in a higher position than her and will be doing a lot more work than her now? And she's going to part-time in like a few weeks! Also, I told the HR that I didn't accept that and I wanted at least 50 cents more, but they wouldn't budge. So I said I would think about it and have yet to contact them to accept. My boss from out of town told me that I would be really happy about what happened but if I had a problem to contact her. So I plan on contacting her but just wanted to hear what you all had to say. I hate confrontation and it took me 4 months to muster up enough balls to go to my store manager and tell her that I would leave if I didn't get anymore money. As glad I am to be getting paid more money, I don't feel as though my pay is correct considering the circumstances. Thoughts? Advice? I'll take anything! Thanks girls!

(After reading this I realized how many times I say "So.." lol sorry!)

I'm not really sure I followed all of that correctly.  How long have you worked a this company?  How long has the other girl worked at this company?

Well, it sounds like you were satisfied with your raise until you found out how much someone else got. I think you should concentrate on the fact that you did recieve what you asked for. A promotion seems like a good thing, you may have more work to do, but you are paid hourly and not salary correct? If you do well, I am sure you have more earning potential in that spot than the other girl.

If you are still not happy with what you are getting paid, then maybe start looking for other jobs, you don't neccessarily have to quit, but it might give you more leverage.

How much do you love your job?  I quit my recruiting job instantly when they wouldn't give me what I wanted.  I just didn't care- it wasn't worth it to me.  But other jobs that have paid less- i usually just work there forever until I find something  better.  I, too, hate confrontations.

I don't think you're mad about the raise - it sounds like you're more angry that they're not telling you the truth and they're taking advantage of your work ethic. And you definitely have a right to be pretty ticked. Whenever this happened to me, my performance suffered enough that I wished I'd just quit off the bat (I'm not saying do that, though). Is there something that could make you feel better about working at this place?

Overall, I think it might help if you could find some way to feel like you're getting somethign for your extra effort, and that you're more protected from the politics. Is there a boss who gets everything she wants that you could try to get closer to? Is there a department you'd like working in better? Would a new desk chair make you happy? Resources for your department? Training, conferences, weekly snacks for "morale"? Seriously, it's in the budget somewhere, it's just a matter of drawing it to you. If they know that you know that you just took one for the team, it might be directed your way. However, it needs to be presented to them gracefully, so they don't put you on the "malcontents" list. "I was so happy that everyone also got a raise. I would have felt awkward being the only one..." then a nice big bit about your extra efforts, your concerns for your new department leading you to ask for more resources, blah, blah blah. Seriously, people don't respect the person who tries to make do with a little to save the company .00000000000000000000000000000002 profits. People respect the manager who gets pizza on Fridays. Good luck!

i don't quite understand your question, but a 12% raise is huge.  any time you get a raise that is over 8-10% or so, that is a very good reflection.
