batchelorette party--need help

Drum rolls and maybe some tuba music--not exactly sure what is right for this announcement: I'm going to be a MOG. Yes, my 37 year-old son is getting married late this summer. This will be his first marriage and my first time being a MOG. He lives in the Chicago area, I live in the SF Bay area.

I'm invited to the batchelorette party. I need gift ideas.

In my day, we had bridal showers and put the bows in the Brides' hair and giggled a lot and drank punch and had cake--no alcohol. (I grew up in Mormon country.) I've never been to a batchelorette party, so I have a few questions. I don't know the bride-to-be very well. She and my son got to know each other at work.

She's been married before. Her own parents have passed away. I know that the bridal attendants will be her older sister, her friends and her daughter, and that there will be all ages--from middle-aged to teen-aged at the party. It's going to be on a boat (I'm assuming Lake Michigan.)

I've read some of the old posts on batchelorette parties. I want to give her something nice, and in this case, I wouldn't feel comfortable giving her a jokey or sexual present--I'll leave that for her old friends. (I've met her sister and her daughter.)

I was thinking of maybe a charm bracelet from Tiffany's, with maybe a special charm that would relate to my son. Dh suggested a key, with "Key to DS's heart" engraved on it. I thought that was a cute idea at the time--we'd just split a bottle of champange. In the daylight, that doesn't seem like such a good idea. My son, left home for college when he was 18, and except for a couple of years when he lived at home while getting a master's, he's been on his own for nearly 20 years. While I love him and adore him, I don't think I've owned the "Key to his heart" for quite a few years!

Sorry this is so long. I'm treading softly here. I've never been a MIL, but my own was the MIL from hell and my own Mom wasn't much better, so I'm learning as I go.

So please, any ideas, tips, feedback you have--I will be grateful for.

First of all, congratulations MOG! Second of all, I think something from Tiffany's is a fantastic idea...but not something related to your son. Every girl wants that little blue box, and I think it would be a very special gift from you especially since her mother has passed. Here are some safe options that I think would fit any sort of taste:

These come in different letters depending on her first (or new last) name. This is the "A".

"Eternal Circle" also comes in silver

i think the tiffany jewelry would be nice

or a really nice wedding album

a spa day at a nice place and a monogrammed bathrobe with her new monogram

you are right---no sexy stuff

maybe nice Lilly Pulitzer PJs and a monogrammed robe and some Aveda products

First of all, having seen you on thread style, I cannot believe you are old enough to have a 37 y/o son -- you look incredible!

That said -- congrats! I like gruiz's idea. I actually have this, and love it:

My little sister gave me these for my wedding, and I adore them!

(they're much whiter IRL).

I am sure whatever you come up with will be great!

Thanks for the good ideas. I've been going through the Tiffany site, looking at all the pendants. They do have some beautiful things. I especially like the pieces halleybird posted. I also like the day at the spq idea.

Thanks for the compliment, halleybird. I owe it mainly to good genes and the good example of my fashion plate grandma and aunts who never gave up and settled into "old-lady" clothes. I also inherited bad feet and my Dad's forehead (bangs forever) so it does balance out.
