I am in the final design stages of my new kitchen, and thought I'd share what I've put together...

Here is the original 1951 kitchen - dig those lucite poles.  Above the window there is a really cool huge vintage chrome fan that I'm keeping:


I decided to go with a honey colored cherry to flow better with the original woodwork of the house:

I'm doing charcoal concrete counters, with Pewabic's Stratton Tile line http://pewabic.com/stratton-tiles.htm -- I'm going to copy the pattern in the bottom left thumbnail using charcoal, wheat, pewabic, and vanilla colored tiles, and with a wide charcoal grout.  I'm also doing a large charcoal concrete backsplash over the stove and will be embedding a huge Pewabic tile in the blue/green "Pewabic" glaze in the cement backsplash.  I'm also doing a cement backsplash over the sink/under the window, but will not be putting tile in it.  The tile work will be counter to cupboard where there is not a backsplash.

Here is my faucet, and I'm doing an undercounter mount stainless steel double basin sink:

Appliances will be GE Cafe -- best rated, even over Wolf, Viking, etc. plus, it doesn't hurt that they're less expensive... pics won't post - going with the duel fuel range and side by side fridge http://www.geappliances.com/products/cafe/



There is wood paneling on the walls behind the bar area, and I'm keeping it.  I'm trying to keep as much of the house as original as possible, and work with it vs. tearing it out.  It's actually very charming.  I'm also putting wood floors in the kitchen, as well.  Yes, I know, a lot of wood, but it's all about flow with the house.  The wood will be broken up with the tile work, concrete, a rug, and window treatments.

As for lighting, I'm keeping it simple with recessed ceiling lights, undercounter lights, and lights in the glass cabinets.

I'm thinking about these counter height stools with black leather seats:

Thinking I might match the wheat colored tile for any exposed walls in need of paint...

Love the black trim on the cabinets and the idea of concrete counters...will the glaze give them a smooth surface? (i know nothing about nothing when it comes to counters and glazes and tiles and kitchen and construction stuff.)

no black trim on the cabinets - just honey colored cherry wood, but I will be using black pulls and knobs on the cabinets.

glaze is on tile only - glaze is the shiny, colored part of tile that faces outward.

LOVING the Pewabic tiles and cabinetry. The countertops will look amazing in there too.

I will point out that while I love the faucet you chose, you won't have the ability to turn on the faucet with your wrist or elbow if your hands are dirty... When we moved into our home it had the cheapest faucet available, which was knobs instead of a lever type handle, and it personally drove me nuts. I don't know if you'd be able to find something in keeping with the style and lever-like, but I wanted to bring it up.

Love the stools too!

Can't wait to see all the pics when its done!

And I love the feet detail on the sink cabinet. If you're taking suggestions I'm not sure about the cabinet above the bar area. It may be in the way - would a shelf or something open it up a bit?

Yeah, I know what you mean.  However, it's such a small kitchen, I need as much storage as I can get.  I have a lot of dishes I want to display, so I plan to use that for perhaps some vintage vernonware homespun plates among other things.

Under that cabinet, I'm going to place a little tv.  There's more room there than those chairs indicate, plus the bar extends beyond the footprint of that upper cabinet, and the counter will wrap around the corner a bit.  PLUS there's some paneling I want to save on that wall, and the cabinet will cover the portion where the paneling ends...

ah - we already bought it! we're used to having two handles on our kitchen faucet, but I appreciate the suggestion :)

Love the look! I've seen concrete counters in a kitchen, bath and outdoor BBQ - it looks awesome. I'd love to encorporate in my house somehow. Nice to see ya posting again wink.gif

houses confuse me, counters scare me, cabinets intimidate me. 

I can't wait to see your finished product, now i'm super interested in the concrete counters...what is the texture like? smooth? kind of rough? will there be any chalky residue on the counter tops? <----clueless.

It looks like it's going to be gorgeous! And I agree with you on the GE Cafe. I did some research for my brother last year and I was surprised at how well made they are in comparison to the brands that we think of as superior (Viking comes to mind.)

Su - I was just over there, and took another look at where the bar and little cabinet would go - you're right - it's in an award spot, and I'm taking it out.  Thanks for pointing that out, I think the kitchen will have a better feel and flow without it.

Jahni - it's a huge undertaking, trust me... AND I have been working with multiple quotes for everything.  The countertops have a smooth texture - check out this site to check out some countertops these people have done (they did countertops for our local Ikea too) http://www.concretedetroit.com/kitchen.htm

Boots - was not my first choice by any means, but I think the GE Cafe appliances are the smartest buy for us for a 30" range.  I was really in love with Aga, but it's just too big. 

Overall, I'm trying to focus on creating a kitchen that truly works for us, and is as timeless as possible.  I also kind of want to embrace the 1951 character of the house but put our own updated spin on it.  I'm also trying to not get caught up in brands or trends.  Concrete isn't very common, it's really practical, and I think it will look best with the tile we're putting in.  Kind of going for a sophisticated rustic feel...

Your kitchen is on the way to be stunning!
I only wanted to ask: will you have hardware on the cabinets? ( knobs maybe?) Your faucet is gorgeous, although it's on the contemporary side. Also, I might be too confused: you mentioned 3 dinnferent backsplashes: I love contrast backsplash, I think it's the jewelry of the kitchen that makes the space special, but am I right? 3 different? ( above sink/oven/general?) Also, i LOVE concrete for countertops! Post more pics as you progress!

Basically I'm continuing use of the charcoal concrete in the backsplash and incorporating pewabic tile in mosiac and an inset.  I have a 22x7 pewabic tile I'm having laid into concrete for over the stove, instead of a continuation of mosaic.  If you look at the link I posted, you can see how tiles can be inset into concrete.

It'll look good, trust me ;) 

As far as hardware, I am planning on simple black pulls and knobs (knobs on the tiny stacked drawers to the right of the sink cabinet, but pulls on any other drawers, as well as the faux drawer front for the dishwasher.)

Well in that case I'm glad I brought it up. I bet you could display the plates on shelves or a rack of some kind in the same space, and see them better. They're really cool.

wood floors are down, pluming and electric are roughed in, a little plasterwork, then finish the floors, then cabinets go in (they're all in boxes in the garage waiting.)

purchased a trestle light for over the peninsula:


and I'm going to get this rug as i like the pattern and the blue will pick up the blue tile in my mosaic backsplash (hand hooked wool):
