There is a political advertising firm here that I really want to work for- I would do pretty much anything for them because I think they are absolutely brilliant. What do I do to get my foot in the door there (other than take an internship because I honestly just can't afford that. I need to pay rent.)?


The president has spoken in two classes that I have taken and I spoke with him after class and got his card but never really followed up with him. (I really suck at networking.) He also graded one of the assignments for my advertising class and gave me an A.


I want to send him an email or give him a call asking about potential opportunities there, but really have no idea how to go about it. I want this too badly to risk messing it up, which is probably why I didn't do it sooner. What should I do/say?

just do it.  don't think of it as "networking" just think of it as getting to make friends w/ someone who'd be a great mentor.  ask if he can spare 5 min to talk to you in an email, he'll probably say call me.  keep calling until you get ahold of him (may have to make friends w/ his asst./secretary as well).  then ask his advice about your career path, ask him to lunch, act really interested in everything he says (shouldn't take too much acting), keep following up and giving him updates on your situation...don't worry sooner or later you'll land the job.  you just have to be persistent.  good luck!

I agree with Esquiress.  definetly follow up with him.  Another thing you should go ahead and do is send in your resume and a cover letter to the HR department and get that on file.  Then you can have them interested in you also while you work on the president of the company.
