We're hosting one next month. We are going to serve wine, beer, hurricanes, and one other "Mardi Gras-ish" drink - maybe mojitos (I found a recipe for a MG inspired one) but am looking for other ideas.
For food, we will be serving lots of heavy hors'dourves. We don't want anything messy and gooey like gumbo etc. but will do crab cakes, maybe a shrimp dish and a few other things.
Thanks, everyone, for the tips. Okay, I'll drop the mojitos idea! Escrime - I've never heard of a King Cake - I'll google it now. Thanks for the recipe Boots; I'm definitely going to try it. Good to know they're easy to make.
I would look to see if Emeril Lagasse had any menus or recipes on his website. He's been in New Orleans sine the early 1980's so I bet he would have a bunch of recipes that would be appropriate for your party.
I've caught his show a few times and he does reference New Orleans cooking styles quite a bit.

I live here in New Orleans and Mardi Gras is such a fun time in the city. It sounds like you pretty much have everything covered. The only other thing I may suggest is doing something like a Mardi Gras Punch for a drink which is basically different fruit jucies and rum. As far as the King Cake which is a huge part of Mardi Gras I can see about sending you one if you would like. I have shipping place near my office that ships Randazzo (Local Bakery) King Cake's which are voted one of the best. As far as any additional food ideas you could do: 1) Shrimp Dip (yummo) 2) Shrimp wrapped in bacon 3) Fried just about anything: fish, shirmp, oysters, okra, etc.... 4) Jambalaya 5) Red Beans & Rice

Let me know if you need help with any recipies.
Thanks, Prissy! That info is helpful, and you are super nice to offer to ship a King Cake! I'm not sure how that would work b/c I live overseas but we do have an American Post office - so it might be worth looking into! Otherwise, maybe I can find a good recipe for one. Thanks again - I am off to research all of these ideas.
