Tom Cruise: Let the cynics talk
NEW YORK (AP) — Let the cynics talk. Tom Cruise is in love — and he just can't restrain himself.

Shortly after Cruise proposed to Holmes in Paris, he threw a press conference announcing the engagement.

By Stuart Ramson, AP

"You know what? There's always cynics. There always has been. There always will be," said Cruise, who hasn't been shy about displaying his affection for Batman Begins actress Katie Holmes. "I have never worried ... about what other people think and what other people say."

Cruise, 42, and Holmes, 26, went public with their romance in April, smooching and posing for photographers in Rome. They recently became engaged.

Many have doubted the romance — the words "publicity stunt" have rained down on the couple like an alien invasion as Cruise has been busy promoting his new film, War of the Worlds, directed by Steven Spielberg, which opens on June 29.

"I have to tell you. It's just a great time in my life," Cruise said in an interview that aired Friday on NBC's Today show. "I'm really happy. And, you know, I'm engaged. I'm going to be married. I can't restrain myself. It's like you've got two little cords on your mouth and you can't stop smiling."

The 42-year-old actor, whose marriages to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman ended in divorce, declined to say what the 26-year-old Holmes has brought to his life that wasn't there in the past.

"I don't want to compare things," Cruise said. "It's that thing where you just — in life when it just happens. ... You meet someone. And it's — I can't even describe it."

When asked if he could be with someone at this stage in his life who doesn't have an interest in the Church of Scientology — Holmes has said she's embracing the religion — Cruise told interviewer Matt Lauer: "Scientology is something that you don't understand. It's like you could be a Christian and be a Scientologist.

"It is a religion. Because it's dealing with the spirit. You as a spiritual being. It gives you tools you can use to apply to your life."

When Lauer mentioned Cruise's earlier criticism of Brooke Shields for taking anti-depressants, Cruise told the Today show co-host he didn't know what he was talking about.

"You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do," Cruise said.

The interview became more heated when Lauer, who said he knew people who had been helped by the attention-deficit disorder drug Ritalin, asked Cruise about the effects of the drug.

"Matt, Matt, you don't even — you're glib," Cruise responded. "You don't even know what Ritalin is. If you start talking about chemical imbalance, you have to evaluate and read the research papers on how they came up with these theories, Matt, OK. That's what I've done."

OK, I actually watched this interview this morning, I love Today.  It wasn't all that heated in my opinion, you could just tell that Cruise was getting frustrated.  Matt Lauer stayed cool, Tom Cruise should have followed that example a little better.  But I don't blame him for being frustrated, he keeps getting asked about this stuff when he's really trying to promote a movie, and he wants to answer honestly, but most people don't understand wtf he is talking about.

I do not like Cruise's approach on his opinions, he really should share his beliefs in a kinder way since he obviously isn't interested in keeping them hidden.  The only thing I fault Cruise for in this particular interview is that he allowed Lauer's questions to bug him, he needs to be patient and understanding that it is not Lauer's job, nor do average people have time, to know every detail of modern medical history, but that is what Cruise is so passionately preaching about unfortunately.  And even those who know a little about what he is preaching, know that this attitude turns more people away than it does turn toward.  In the end, I do praise Cruise for being bold about his convictions in this matter, but I think he's going about it impatiently.

I "listened" to the interview while I was getting ready, so I can't say how the 2 of them looked (aggravated, frustrated, calm...) while talking, could just hear their voices.

Seems to me that TC is pretending to be who he is not. ok, may be he's familiar with the story of psychiatry. But is he a doctor? During the whole interview I was expecting the interviewer to ask him where he got his MD from, b/c he was talking as if he is a doctor! The interviewer, on the other hand, was saying that people he KNOWS have been helped my medication.

It's a difficoult subject, adn I don't think TC is qualified to talk about that. I was thinking time ago with a friend who works in the field, and she explained me the pro and cons of drug terapy versus terapy sessions, how they can be integrated to make te patient feel better soon but also solve issues on the long term and so on. Besides, this is totally patient-dependent, the "perfect" remedy changes from person to person.

It's too bad. b/c I like TC, but he is taking this too far!

I saw a few clips of the interview and Tom Cruise looked really exasperated and almost angry when he was chastising Matt Lauer. He really thinks he is right and everyone else doesn't know what they're talking about.

Frankly, I don't think he has the faintest idea what he's talking about. But I'm sure he believes he does, having learned all about modern psychiatry from the scientologists' point of view...

I've heard more and more discussions about Scientology lately since Tom's little episodes and it really sounds like brain-washing more than a religion.

Any thoughts?

entertainment weekly ran an interview with cruise a week or two ago, in which he made statements about psychology that the interviewer refuted with multiple sources. examples: cruise says carl jung edited nazi newsletters and that this one drug was named after adolph hitler.  no one believes either of these to be true outside of scientology.  i'm no expert either, but it seems to me that he is being very outspoken and insistent about subjects he really does not understand.  if he's going to speak out so much like this then he's going to be asked about it in interviews.  also, he's only being this outspoken at a time when he has a new movie coming out -- he's doing it deliberately to draw attention to that, it's not like he's always conducting press conferences regardless of whether or not he's promoting a film -- so he shouldn't be surprized that it has made the public less interested in war of the worlds and more interested in the whole katie holmes/scientology/psychology thing.

Don't you think Steven Speilberg should be pissed off with Tom about shooting his mouth off. Noone is going to want to see this movie because of Tom Cruise overload.

I'd be a little annoyed with my lead star if I was him.

Yeah, I'm SURE Tom has fully researched the drugs that he is condemning.  And of course he knows the history of psychiatry.  I mean, he's Tom Cruise.

Ugh!  I'm so over him.

I think it was completely rude to tell Matt Lauer that he didn't know what he's talking about.  Matt Lauer is a pretty smart, well educated man, Tom shouldn't assume that he is the be all end of psychiatric knowledge while no one else knows what they are talking about.  Reading a few research papers doesn't make him an expert.

I am so mad about the whole Brooke Shields thing.  I will NEVER EVER go see a Tom Cruise movie.  That man will never get a dime of my money.

I'll probably still watch Cocktail on tv tho.
