I hemmed a dress! Myself! By hand!

One of my goals while I'm on break from school is to learn how to sew.  Nothing fancy, but I'd like to be able to do minor alterations by hand and on my sewing machine (which I've had for 5 years but is still unopened from the original box).

We're going on vacation in less than 2 weeks, and I recently scored a $20 black taffeta cocktail dress at the consignment place that was perfect except for the mid-calf length.  I've been reading my handy dandy Sewing for Dummies book, so I reviewed the chapter on how to sew a blind hem by hand and got to work.  I've barely sewn a stitch in 13 years, but I was able to put a blind hem in this dress and hem the lining as well, in almost exactly one hour.

Yay me! w00t.gif

No pics of this one (not like you can see anything anyway - the hem is invisible by design wink.gif), but I'm definitely branching out to do some more exciting projects soon, and I'll post befores and afters of those for sure!

Awesome! Congrats!!

Sewing is one skill that I'd really like to work on during the next year. My mom taught me how to sew on a button over the holidays and even though it was a small thing, I felt like I accomplished something.

Wow! Way to go! Learning how to at least hem would save me so much money. I have to get most things altered.

That's so great. You can probably do sleeves too!

awesome!!

I am so crappy at sewing. I need to take a class or something just to be up to your level. The few things I tried to hem did not look so pretty smile.gif

Kelly - seriously, the only experience I've had is a home-ec class in 7th grade and reading a bit of my Sewing for Dummies book.  And I am still completely baffled by most of the machine sewing instructions in the book!  There are diagrams of different hand stitches, and pointers for how and when to use them.  Maybe your library has it?

Or, there is always Steam-A-Seam, which is double stick tape that becomes permanent when ironed.  I just got some more of that, too wink.gif.

You inspired me to hem a dress that I have. Since I'm 5'4" most dresses hit me after my knee, mid calf sometimes. I'm going to start hemming everything in my closet!
