I live in Los Angeles, but I'm going to be in New York. I actually just figured out that since Wicked is touring the country, they won't be on Broadway. The day that I want to see a show in NYC, June 21...they'll be performing in Hollywood.

is there a specific show you want to see? the newer shows and the better selling shows usually aren't in tkts. you may have to go to the box office for those shows. the shows they carry change all the time (depending on the flow of customers.. the older shows are less likely to sell out so more likely to be at tkts). but shows like wicked, the producers are probably not at tkts, since they are pretty in-demand now.

I was hoping for Spamalot and the Producers but I realize they are still really in demand. But I would also take Hairspray and I figured that was older...would anyone know if it's still in its prime or have its glory days past. I Rent but IMO the cast has been better in the past and I refuse to have a half-assed performance ruin my night.

Normally, when in doubt, I'd see Phantom of the Opera because I love it and I'm a dork but I think they're touring as well.

My brother seems like he will join the fray, so we may just ditch the whole thing and go to a Yankees game.

If you want a good review of all of the musicals and shows, I would try and look at a copy of Time Out NY. It's weekly and their Theater section is in the back of the magazine. Also, If you go to Broadway.com, they list all the shows, who is starring in the role and also give reviews.

I've never seen Hairspray, but I know the original star (Melissa something - I can't remember) is going to be returning to the show for 4 weeks. If you want a specific show for the day, I would probably just purchase the ticket either through the box office or ticketmaster.

If you are flexible about the show I would suggest the TKTS booth - just not the one in time square. There is another office downtown near South Street Seaport. Search for their website and it will give you both addresses. I have been to this office a few times and never had to wait in a long line. Also I think they are open all day unlike the times square booth.

admittedly, i've never tried the tkts booth. standing in long lines with crowds of people always makes me grumpy. however, i've had good luck with just ordering ahead of time through broadway.com. i don't think you'd be able to get tickets for spamalot without paying a lot for them -- a few of my friends have tried to go and not been able. i saw "glengary glen ross" a month ago; if you're interested in that at all it is so worth it! the acting is a little uneven, but the strong performances are excellent: liev schreiber, jeffrey tambor, alan alda. it's a drama and very talky, but riveting, and zooms by at 90 minutes.

My best friend and I ended up getting tickets ordered by the hotel conciege and seeing Movin' Out. It was AWESOME (and we have killer orchestra seats).

Now we all know I'm a rather HUGE Billy Joel fan.

that's usually true, except for "wicked" right now, the original broadway cast is in LA for a limited run. i don't know if they have another cast doing the show in NY simultaneously, but that is why the LA performances of "wicked" sold out months in advance. there is also a touring company of "wicked" that is (or will be) in lots of other cities in near future, but that won't be the original broadway cast at all.

they sometimes do that with bigger/more popular shows (they did a modified version of that with "hairspray," too).
