This August I'm moving from the east coast to Colorado and I need to get all my stuff with me. I want to do it as cheaply as possible, so I've been looking at renting a moving truck and driving out myself (not the ideal, but I keep trying to tell myself it will be fun to drive a big truck thousands of miles... ha!). U-haul is going to be at least $2,500 or so (before taxes and insurance, gas, meals and hotels along the way, etc.). I found this place called "Move America" online and, if I load up the truck and unload, it will be around the same price and I don't have to spend days driving. So... my question is this- has anyone used them before... seems too good to be true? Also, has anyone been through this process- any tips, other companies to recommend? TIA (I'm so psyched I finally know what this means- thanks, other thread)!
When I moved from Cincinnati to Connecticut Atlas Van Lines moved my things they came and boxed everything in sight and loaded it all up including my car onto a huge 18 wheeler and brought it here to CT.They were very courteous and helpful, they also unpack when you get to your destination. My job paid the expense but I think it was about $2,500 - $3,000.They are in the yellow pages.
We were considering hiring movers for our Washington to Colorado move a couple of weeks ago - when we first talked to them on the phone, they said for two people moving from a one bedroom apartment the cost would be about $1,200. Then the estimator came out to look at our things and said we had less than the average amount of stuff. However, when we got our quote it was $3,600! And to top it off, they could have our stuff in their truck for anywhere between 2 and 19 days and would only be giving us 24 hrs notice on when they would be dropping it off in Colorado! Um, no thanks.
Your U-Haul quote sounds expensive - have you looked into Penske and Budget? Or maybe Pods (where they drop off a big container for you to fill and then pick it up and move it for you)? If you do end up driving yourself, I must say that looooong drives in a U-Haul are much more comfortable than loooong drives in your car IMO.
Where in Colorado are you moving?

I'm sorry I'm just now responding, ladies... completely forgot I had posted this! Thanks so much to both of you for the tips. I know movers can have all these hidden costs, etc., so it's always nice to hear voices of experience- waiting 19 days for my bed, etc. to arrive would totally not be cool. LMonet, I am moving to Boulder!
