So I may have somewhat of a new job opportunity coming my way. Right now, I'm an Executive Assistant for JPMorgan Chase (formerly Bank One). I'm really, really bored w/my job. I've been doing it for 5 years and I just know I have more potential. I love my boss, but this job is just so mindless and tedious. Anyhow, last year I had an opportunity, with in the group I work in, to take on some extra work. It involved my interests, which are Communications, event-planning, website construction and maintenance, etc. Well I've been doing some of that, but I'm basically still an assistant. While doing some of the extra work, I've gotten to know this girl Amy who is the Communications guru for my manager's boss. Her and I work so well together and get along great. And she's someone I can talk to. So today a light bulb went off in my head - "why not talk to Amy about career opportunties w/in her world?" So I called her up and told her I'm bored being just an assistant and want to get out of this role eventually. She told me that it was so funny I called because she just heard of an opportunity last week and thought of me. Basicially another assistant, who helps her out w/communications and website stuff is leaving. She's going to pitch to her boss that I take on that work. I'd still be an assistant, but I'd get to do what i'm interested in and she said hopefully transition completely out of the assistant role eventually. So she's talking to her boss and she's going to let me know. She said she's really going to push for me because I'm so eager and willing to do more and I'm very helpful and enthusiastic. So I'm really hopeful and excited. This could be a good move up for me and out of my boring job now.
So just keep your fingers crossed for me please. I'll post an update next week after I hear from her.
Hope it all works out - good for you to take the initiative to move on - I worked in a similar bank environment & was bored & my boss basically pushed me out of the nest & made me apply for another job where I could learn & live up to my potential. I am very grateful that she did. You are in such a big organization that if your reviews are good, there is no reason not to move on to bigger & better. Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the words of encouragement laken1!! My boss sounds a lot like yours. Everytime I have a review w/him, he asks me what I want to do besides admin work and helps me figure out who to talk to or who I could work with. I haven't even run this by him yet, but I know he'll be all for it.
As an update - I spoke w/Amy - the woman I contacted about this and she said she ran it by her boss today, very briefly, and her boss was super excited. They are meeting tomorrow to dicuss, but she thinks it will work out for me.
Now I have a question - I will still be assisting my boss, but now that I'm taking on this new stuff...which will be more clearly defined once we have discussions, shouldn't I ask for a raise and possibly a title change? How do I approach that?

I would have to assume if they are piling new work on you that a raise / title change would definately be in order - I would wait to see what they offer you, but if they don't mention it, I would. Say something like "what is the compensation for my additional duties" or something like that - I can't imagine that they wouldn't offer you SOMETHING. And I find too in banking they are very apt to give you a title change, it's important to you & doesn't cost them anything! lol

this sounds really promising, and like a great opportunity for you! way to go!
i think when you meet with them to discuss the position, they will bring up the raise/title change themselves. but on the off chance that they don't, definitely bring it up. what laken1 suggested you say would be perfect.
I forgot to give everyone an update on my work situation - well I got the job! I am now dedicating 50% of my time to working w/the communications girls. Last week was my 2nd week and I'm loving it, though it's been a lot of new stuff to learn and very overwhelming at times. But my boss was totally cool w/it and very encouraging. And we discussed a pay raise that the four of us agreed to have me do this as a 3 month trial - so it Sept. we'll meet again and if it's working out they will compesate me! I'm very excited, as there is even an opportunity for me to do the communications full time next year. Thanks to all of your for your kind words and encouragement! I'm actually starting to enjoy my job again

Yay! Congratulations! Make sure you bring up the salary thing again if they don't mention it by 3 months and 1 week.
