I'm in need of decorator/paint help

I know I've been MIA for quite a while. All of the uglier cosmetic work on the house just burned me out. We tore up the entire tile floor downstairs and had carpet installed. The ugly green carpet upstairs will have to stay until probably 2011. We'll use that tax money to take care of it. Before really thinking about what colors to do, I painted pretty much the whole downstairs a neutral tan. Now, I actually want to add color and separation between the dining and living room. I don't have a whole lot of money for furnishings and such, so the tables and raggedy couch will have to stay. I haven't finished painting the dining room, but this is the color that I chose, and I do like it. The initial thought was to have that stripe be a grayish brown color, but D had the awesome idea of painting the living room the gray color. So.....what do you guys think? I need ideas. Here's the pictures:

the wall that is blue was going to be an accent color, when I originally thought to do the living room  a brown color, so that will be repainted

Thanks guys!

alas, I have nothing more to add! your place is coming along nicely though! I still think some orange accessories/accents in the living room with the gray walls would look nice.

I like the orangey color in the dining room too. I also like that all your furniture works together, and that the black/dark wood finishes pick up the black on the fireplace.

I don't like the baby blue in the living room - good idea to change that. There's also a lot of beige - the dining chair cushions, drapes, recliner, carpet and the walls are all basically the same color.

A berry/pomegranate color might work with the orange. I also think if you changed the curtains to something more vibrant it would have a big impact. Instead of the baby blue you could try a darker wine - something that coordinates but doesn't precisely match.

The medium/dark blue of whatever is hanging on the dining chair - that color works well with the orange too.

Hi!
I have a couple of questions with suggestions:)
1. In dining - is the stripe lighter then the adjacent wall with the window or it is light/shadow effect? If it's a 3rd color - to me it's weird & I"d break it with window treatments. The lone narrow window on the striped wall is too much in your face, i think you need curtains, you can maybe create drama & close the whole corner from the bigger window on the taupe/beige wall to that narrow window with curtains. I"d suggest maybe in olive color or navy or teal.

2. baby blue is too babyish... Maybe a darker version, or medium sage would work there, especially since it's closed to your dining & all colors need to work together. I think you have it on your inspiration board on top of the console table there.
Also, i think you need better window treatments on that small window by the fireplace.

3. Re: fireplace, I know I'm pushy & it's not on your list, but it's too dark. I do love dark wood myself & appreciate the wood work any time, although this one seems to drown in darkness. If you can't re-tile, I think it'll stand out if the wood part would be painted white?

4. I think a pendant light fixture will be beautiful in stead of that small one above dining table, as well as instead of a fan with the draw string in the living.

thanks for the advice, guys!

The curtains are definitely going, I borrowed them from my MIL just to have something up for now, and until the color scheme is decided.

The lighting fixture as well, haha, it's totally out of place. We needed something and cheap for now, it didn't have one when we moved in.

Yana, the dining room will actually all be the pumpkin color, I've just been lagging on it, there will be no tan in there whatsoever.

I do totally wish we could re-tile the fireplace area, maybe in time. I do like your idea of painting the wood though, thanks!

Dining place all pumpkin? Dk. chocolate curtains will add drama & appetite! I just went to Pier1Imports with a friend, I'm their design consultant on home remodeling & decor, so we went there for the curtains - they have a GREAT sale, about $27 per panel, good variety & quality. Some are available online, but I suggest the store, you can touch/feel.

I would put Matt Emulsion on the ceiling, then line walls, emulsion with two coats of Matt or Silk then prepare wood and apply two coats of Dulux Satin finish, Apply your finished Wallpaper. Also if you paint bare walls the surface has to be near per fact,if not it will show once its been painted.
