Would love to know...I'm not really a frou frou kind of person and I just want something a bit funky and eclectic on the relatively cheap. I can get a "superior queen" room for $143, which is pretty good considering the relatively central location of the hotel.
Haven't stayed there, but walked through the first floor b/c the outside was so fascinating (huge horns on the facade). It's got a very funky downtown art gallery feel (actually, the lobby is an art gallery). It's boho, dark and funky. I am sure it attracts a very interesting and eclectic crowd. Worth a try for the adventuresome - I think it could be fun! Actually, the web site photos make it look like it's been remodeled since I checked it out in 2000. The furnishings then looked completely different.
If no luck there, try quikbook.com for small hotels at a good price. In the hotter summer months, lots of rates go down. In the very slowest periods you can get good rates at even the trendier hotels. Let me know if you have more questions about hotels in NYC. I have stayed a ton of smaller boutique properties booked using quikbook, so I might be able to help.
