Dying hair back to natural
Permalink Closed

I'm thinking about dying my hair back to its natural color. Its really blond right now and whenever my roots grow in, my natural hair looks like a really pretty caramel brown- much darker than the dull ash blond I was as a teenager.

I've been dying my hair so long I'm not really sure what to do. Any tips on dying hair back to your natural shade, or at least a shade natural enough to grow it out?

It sounds like a simple single process dye job. If your REAL blond, just know it will absorb lots of dye so start a shade or two lighter than you want. I'd stay away from ashy browns because it will give you a gray cast. I'd think you want a warm caramel, and maybe a few highlights just so your not so shocked by the color change.

Hmm - I wouldn't do this at home, so your hairdresser would probably be able to help you? Maybe grow out your roots a bit more than usual before your appointment so she can really see your shade.

I just did this. I went from bright red back to something close to my natural color, which is auburn/nutmeg-y brown (it's dyed a little darker than natural, but she did that because the dye will fade a bit with time). I had my stylist do it. There was no way I was attempting that myself.

Dude, what is your natural color, by the way? I think that Kenzie is right, it's probably best to do this at a salon so they can match the roots as close as possible so that there isn't an obvious line while it's all coming in.

I'd maybe go to your stylish initially.  After that and for the duration of the growing-in process, I do an at-home semi-permanent color to keep everything relatively uniform in color and fresh on a regular basis.
