Looking for recs for an LCD HDTV
Permalink Closed

I'm asking for a 1080p LCD HDTV for Christmas.

I don't know if the size affects anything, but I'm looking for a 37 inch tv, because anything larger likely won't fit into my tv cabinet.

My brother has a Vizio as do several of my friends and I've never been impressed with the picture quality. It always looked grainy to me, so please no recs for Vizio.

Does anyone have any recs for an LCD HDTV? I'm particularly interested in LG, Sony and Toshiba.

Thanks!

I just bought an LG. We've had it for 2 weeks and we love it. We bought a 47 inch from bestbuy online. They tend to run sales on Wednesday (just an fyi). I forget the model but it is the 47 inch, 1080p, 120hz refresh rate. Half the reviews on the bestbuy website complain about an audio lag but we have yet to experience that with this LG. I think it is just one of those things where if you happen to get one of those tvs it would be best to just return it for another one.

In case you didn't know LG is the cheaper version of the Samsung (same parts, same factory, different name). I remember reading and hearing from a coworker that Sony's are a tad overpriced and haven't heard anything on Toshiba.

Thanks for the review, Aurora! Also, thanks for the tips on BB sales and LGs being made by the same manufacturer as Samsung. Good to know!

My friends have a Sony and to me the colors looked weird - almost unnatural. It could have been the movie we were watching though (Yes Man). Also, I think Vizio is made by Sony, so I might just want to stay away from Sony.

I'm definitely interested in the LG tvs. They seem to have good reviews for the price point. I definitely want to find one with 120 hz. I think 60hz is supposed to have more blur when the picture moves fast.

We have an LG and love it. We have also had a Samsung and my husband (who is a huge tech person and researched to no end) loved that brand. We would have gotten it again when we got a larger tv, but we came across a crazy good deal on the LG.

We love our Samsung. It's an LED, not an LCD, and it isn't completely flat (but very narrow).

On the samsung note, I just realized my 19 inch is a flat screen HD tv. It has worked well for the past couple of years but our complaint with it is that the picture is dark no matter what setting you have it on and you have to look directly at the tv at all times to see the picture otherwise you'll just see black. This tv is about 2 years old and they might have since improved it or it could be common for the screen size I don't know but that was something I considered when we went shopping this time around (the samsung was a Christmas present from my parents and purchased on buy.com).

Thanks girls! I think I am going to go with an LG. It turns out that not many 37 inch 1080p TVs also come with 120hz (I think most come with 60hz). Samsung and LG seem to be one of the few brands who make them, and the Samsung TVs are several hundred dollars more than the LG versions.

There is an amazingly good deal on a 37 inch LG on Amazon right now ($731). I just have to convince my dad it's safe to order a TV from them. I know they have their white glove delivery service, but he still seems wary.

Thanks again!
