We do have health insurance, and it still cost us more than $500 for a shot of lidocaine and 7 stitches. We just finished paying it off last month, and it happened last February!
After that incident I did some checking around, and there is an urgent care facility nearby that I wrote down the hours of, and there's also a walk-in type of place where you can make appointments online and they're open extended hours. That's where we're going next time instead! Maybe you have something similar around? It sure is a hell of a lot cheaper ...

And ditto Elle. Our last ER visit (when DH cut his hand open with a kitchen knife) was way expensive, and we have insurance. I think it was $1200 or thereabouts.

I was so surprised how much ER visits cost. It was 2 years ago last time I was there, and I was so lucky in that it was juuust in the couple days when I had overlapping insurance plans - my parents' was dropping me because I had graduated college, so I was starting on my own plan. My parents' plan is great and I only had to pay $100 or something out of pocket, but if I had been solely on my own crappy insurance it would have been like $1100 out of pocket.
