Up until about 2 years ago, I never really thought that much about handbags.  I basically carried a black or brown one during the winter, and then for the spring I would buy a cute one and carry it all spring.  That's it--two handbags (at most three) for the whole year.  Well, when I started getting manicures about two years ago, the girl who does my nails changes handbags every day to match her outfit.  Now I have started doing that and I am getting obsessive about it and I want them to be nice--not cheapo.  It is getting expensive.  Now I am thinking I need a white leather one, a lt yellow leather one, a lime green leather one, etc.  I am thinking of going back to my past simplicity and just carrying one handbag all the time in a neutral color.  It would save alot of money that I could just use to buy extra clothes and shoes.  So here is the question:

How do you feel about the necessity/importance of a handbag to enhance an outfit?  I have noticed in some of the thread style pictures that Fashionprincess never photographs a handbag and she always looks nice.  But, hotcocoa has photographed matching handbags with her outfits and she looks nice.  So, is the perfect handbag really important to make an outfit look nice?  What do you think?

shopaholic, i used to be the same way, i didn't even have two handbags--just one, a deep red coach leather one and matching wristlet (no logos on the bag or wallet).  i'd just carry it w/ everything, regardless of whether it matched or not.  actually, sometimes i didn't even carry it out, just put it in my backpack (was in school at the time).  my friends would go nuts because handbags are very important to them and they'd go crazy when they saw my otherwise very cute outfit w/o a matching bag.

so i've been converted, but not totally.  i have about 7 now, and want the collection to grow but in such a way that each bag stands on its own and wasn't bought to just go w/ one particular outfit.  also, there's something to be said for the everyday bag that goes w/ everything--imo, that's part of the beauty of the Kooba Sienna, for example.  also, i have no desire to match my shoes to my bags, that concept seems a tad dated to me though i have seen other girls pull it off well (it would never work for me personally since i have way more shoes than bags).

anyway, my point is that it's become important for me to build a collection of beautiful bags that complement my wardrobe but don't necessarily perfectly match any outfit in particular.

this is my experience.  so i was such a clothes person for the last few years.  i wore the best outfits and then coordinated my looks with a handbag usually colored (like a colored bcbg leather bag....i have so many now).  now i feel like my clothes come second to my shoes and handbags.  i think it's cuz i just got so sick of all my patterned matching outfits.  so now i pick my bag and shoes, and usually do a more simple outfit, making my bag/shoes my focus item.

in my case.  i think you're either a bag or clothes person.  i feel like if you focus too much on your clothes AND bag it just looks off.  i could be TOTALLY WRONG THOUGH!!

I'm in grad school, so I need to haul books and papers and sometimes my laptop around. So most of the time, its either my big black Jansport backpack with my wallet or a small purse inside, or when I have fewer books, a tote of some sort (this spring I've adopted a green fabric Nine West bag).

I do have a smallish collection of other purses I pull out when I need it - but they are all inexpensive, because I use them so infrequently - the most common one I carry is a black squarish microfiber bag, that I actually think I got as a freebie with a magazine subscription a while back. My two nice Coach City bags are languishing in my closet until I need good leather purses again.

Handbags are my life.. I probably have a dozen or so.. and only maybe two that cost me less than 3 or 4 hundred $. God I am obsessed.

I don't match my bags to my outfit or my shoes.. I think this idea is somewhat dated. Like with jeans and a white tee, I would probably carry my huge Pink Trina Turk clutch.. I think complimentary colors work best together. Probably half my bags are black (this is the color I wear the most too, just by accident) I like to switch it up but not everyday.

Oh.. and I think BIG bags make you look thinner.. so I always say.. the bigger the better!
