How to Dye a trench coat?

I have a black Kenneth Cole trench that I bought a couple of years ago.  Last year it didn't fit over my fat arms but woohoo! this year it fits fine!  Problem is, after a couple of washings, the black has begun to fade.  I am considering dying it back to black but have never done this.

I am wondering:
1) what is the best method? 
2) will it leave stains on whatever I use to dye it in? (washing machine, sink)
3) will the color rub off on my clothes and body afterwards?

I'd like to know about this too. I have a black cardi that's faded significantly.

They make black RIT dye, but I'm not sure how it works.

Is it synthetic or natural fiber? Synthetics don't take dye too kindly.

In my youth I dyed things frequently. I never used a washing machine, just a utility sink or bucket, and one cotton jacket that I dyed on the stove. That was by far the best result. (Giant pot, boiling water, etc.)

Unfortunately the color may rub off on your other clothes at least the first few times you wear it and you will always, always need to hand wash it, or wash it all by itself, afterward.

What about a special detergent for blacks?

I strongly suggest you ask/use professionals, since a trench has lining of a completely different fabric content ( at the factory, naturally, each fabric is dyed separately, before it's sewn) & don't forget the hardware that can also get stained. Also, even if you cover all in black - it might turn out uneven, you'll see blotches of color in light, can also damage fabric feel - it won't be soft...staining might occur....Seriously, either let it be or get it done professionaly ( inquire with dry clean people).

I think I'm going to skip it - spoke with the original style expert (mom) who dissuaded me also. She says it will be uneven and any stains I had will be more pronounced. Also the color might bleed into my skin. Since I wore it for over a year before the dying I'm sure there will spots of old stains or deodorant marks or whatnot. There goes that idea!

Maximus- You might want to look at the date for threads. This thread is from September of 2009. I think the ship has sailed on Xtina and her trench coat. HTP!
