Is it wrong to use just one eyeshadow color on my lids every day? I stopped by the Chanel counter today and told the woman I was looking for one neutral color that I could wear every day and she just looked at me and said, " You only use one shade? You don't even use a different shade in the crease?" She made me feel like an idiot.
Is there something wrong with only using one shade? I've never quite mastered using several shades and so I prefer using just one, two max if I have time.
Another question: I let her do my eye makeup and ended up buying a quad just to shut her up. If I don't use it, can I return it to Macy's?
Thanks!

It's in ol' Chanel-counter-lady to encourage 57 different eyeshadow shades on a daily basis. And tell you you have to wear lipliner and lipstick and blush everyday, too.
What? You mean you wear the same shade everyday?! Don't tell me that you also wear the same shade season to season? For heaven's sake were you raised by wolves?!"
Ahem.
If you want to use more than one, do that. If not, do that. IMO the only people who need to use 3 or 4 eyeshadow shades on their lids at once are on TV or being photographed for some reason. It's just personal taste, y'know?

It better not be wrong because that's what I do. For a fancy night out I'll pull out the big guns and use - gasp! - two. And I still look pretty hot if I say so myself.
I bought one of those 4-shadow palettes once and followed the directions of what shade to put where, but honestly I only did that once or twice. It was a lot of bother for something that didn't even seem that pretty. Then I just threw it away.

Lol, thanks Elle! I think one or two shades suits me just fine. Frankly, I don't have the patience to try and apply any more than that.
Also, found some info on the Macy's return policy on MUA. That quad will be going back! I prefer d/s eyeshadow anyway, because I never come close to using up the whole pan.
ETA: fixed my spelling!

She's working on a commission so of course she wants you to buy as many colors as she can get you to.
I typically wear one color during the day. Eye makeup is so easy to over do, IMO. If I'm going out at night, I'll either wear a more intense color or blend a few shades.
I say wear what makes you comfortable. Even if it's no make up at all.
I hate makeup counters for this very reason. They try to make you feel stupid and like you're doing something WRONG.
If you like one shade, wear 1 shade. The point of layering several is to create depth or elongate the eyes, which not all eyeshapes need, and certainly not for every day.
A quad can be very useful though, esp for special occasions. And yes you can return at any time! I once returned a foundation to the Chanel counter and was treated like SH*T.
I had the same experience at Sephora one time. I went in and asked, just like you, for one neutral shade that I could wear everyday to work that would compliment me. The lady thought I was crazy and kept trying to convince me that I needed to layer! I'm so glad you posted this because I have thought maybe I was one of the few who only used on shadow.

We should gather examples from the hundreds of magazine articles that use the phrase "wash of color" and drop it off at our local makeup counters. So annoying.
Even if you were wrong, for some reason, no one has any business treating you like poo--especially just to sell something.

Ditto, same at Bobbi Brown in Bloomingdales. I wanted a cream shadow to use every day. Each one was too light, too grey or too brown. I had to explain to the sales person that I wanted a simple cream formula - she kept saying you have to use it as a base then layer it. No you don't!
I can't get behind excessive makeup for daytime, so if it's wrong, I don't want to be right. I have a daily/daytime "look" of one shadow plus liner (liquid or cake or the equivalent). I don't wear the same shadow every day, but I generally try to keep it simple.

This is what I'd like to do, but I can't seem to get the hang of liquid liner.
Thanks for all the responses ladies! I knew she was trying to sell me as much as she could, but I still felt like I was doing something wrong.

I personally love to draw, so make up for me is just another form of drawing, so i can use 1 color sometimes or up to 5, depends on the occasion, mood & look I'm after. I don't think there is anything wrong with using just 1. But you can start using maybe 2 to make it richer for some occasions, rather then 1 for every day. Honestly, don't be afraid, you can't go too wrong...it might turn out to be fun!

HAHAHAhahahaha I love this rant! Wait a minute, people who work at make up counters ALSO wear more than one shade! LOL
Well I'm right there with you on doing it wrong then. Most days I wear only one because I am running late and don't have the time to apply the 2nd one.
Plus most days makeup ladies do anything to my face, it is horrendous. Even if their makeup looks great. So I wouldn't trust what they say to do to my face, anyway
