How do you keep the color? (sorry if your a true redhead)
I got my hair colored about a month ago and you can barely see the red, its been washed out I guess. do I keep getting colored the same color again and again and it'll stay longer each time or what? confused!
Yep I used to be a redhead too, and red is the hardest color to maintain. Aveda makes color depositing shampoos/conditioners that I loved when I was a redhead. Becareful though because it can stain your tub.
Also I suggest you ask the colorist to put a sealant/gloss over when you get the color done it helps it last...a little.
I had a lot of red in my natural hair color before I started turning gray. (I'm still not very gray.)
One day I asked my hairdresser to color my hair a tad bit more red. He said, as others have said, that red was the hardest color to maintain. I was quite happy with it at first, then one day he turned me over to his assistant who was having a life-crisis of some sort. She left the color on too long. I was having my own life-crisis at the time (moving) and it was several days before I looked in the mirror and noticed my hair color was--eek--orange. The color had peroxide in it. I was so freaked out that I wouldn't let him fix it--didn't let him color it again. I was very new at coloring then. The red faded and I was a yellow-blonde. Eek! I cringe just thinking about it.
As far as the red, I had to change my make-up--we are talking just a little bit red now. I didn't change my wardrobe, but if I'd had the time and money then, I would have had to seriously rethink it.
The lesson learned: be extremely careful and make certain you trust your hairdresser. You might look great with slightly auburn hair, but it is unlikely you will look great with orange hair.
I used to be a red head,(now my hair is navy blue).
I 2nd the Aveda shampoo and conditioner, there are others brands that make similar shampoo's too. If you cut back on the amount of conditioner you use the color dosn't fade as fast. Also using hairspray or hair gell fades colors fast.I hope this helps red is sooo hard to keep.

Several years ago I tried my hand at coloring my own hair and was just too nervous, so I get it highlighted at a salon. Anyway, at the time I was doing it myself, I found this website, http://www.robertcraig.com , and they were very helpful to me. I have seen it advertised in magazines and it is supposed to be the cat's meow. I emailed them and they were very helpful to me. They have some recipes online and the lady that answers their email is very prompt in her responses and very helpful. There are some testimonials from people who have colored their hair red using it and they say it works amazingly. You might check it out. http://www.robertcraig.com/client.html (the testimonials)
Sorry - Mine is natural so I'm not much help. I do use Pantene's Red Expressions Shampoo. Mainly because I've always gotten angry that there were shampoos for blonde's and brunette's but never redheads, so when Pantene released this line of haircare for redheads - I couldn't pass it up!!
