I'm hoping to work in an art gallery this summer - What do people wear? Business casual that's somehow also artsy?

I believe that FP works in an art gallery so you might check out her threadstyle posts.

fp has really great style so definitely check out her posts. i feel like people in art galleries tend to dress more creatively (that could totally be a stereotype). but it depends on what you're going to do. if you end up installing exhibits and stuff you probably don't want to wear anything too nice.

i worked in galleries for years and basically it's like anything goes. the arthandler kids, usually dirty skinny rocker dudes, would wear jeans and t's... the owners would wear suits or shirt-tie/skirt-blouse. and the actually gallery staff would wear anything. you could dress up (like a dress or skirt) or jeans and a nice shirt. it was all about looking polished rather than what you were actually wearing.

i developed a seriously insane wardrobe from all my time in the galleries because you could wear the dressiest thing to work and it was fine. now i have a million cocktail dresses and nutty ensembles that i could never wear in my current corporate environment.

sigh i miss those days. it was more fun to shop back then because you never said "can i wear this to work?"

Dot, would you be willing to tell me more about working in galleries? I'm really interested in it, but I'm not sure where to start. Especially because I'm from Oregon, but want to be in New York. TIA!
