firing pat kingsley, queen-hell publicist of all time, was the worst move tom c. ever made. she protected him from himself, from making an arse out of himself every time someone put him on camera. he swapped her out for a yes-man, his sister, who doesn't tell him "tom, you can't say these things and preach non-stop about your religion, or people will stop going to see your movies."
sometimes having a little mystery about your personal life is a very very good thing.
and i agree with you all on the fact that he really should stay out of brooke's business--she was brave to go public with what she dealt with in the hope of helping other women. not only are his opinions misguided, but he shows no class by airing them in public. yuck.
hmmm... back when i was depressed 9 years ago my doctor told me there was a chemical background for it. gee, i think that contradicts tom's little sermon! my doc said that my seratonin levels had gone down too low during a long-term difficult time, and after i got on some meds (and had some therapy) i was back to myself.

It doesn't surprise me Tom Cruise says those things. Or that a religion (of any sort) promulgates the idea that ppd is nonsense. That's what they do. If it's something that women only can experience and have to deal with, you can guarantee men (and a lot of religions) are going to trivialize it.
All that said, he's a dick. No if, ands, or buts about it.
Usually, generalized negative comments about "religion" or "religions" don't bother me, but I have to admit, bluebirde, your comment "[about not being surprised] Or that a religion (of any sort) promulgates the idea that ppd is nonsense. That's what they do." really threw me for a loop...
I guess I'm a little confused as to how something as specific as Tom Cruise commenting on his personal views on post partum depression (inappropriate, misguided and potentially dangerous as they were) would lead to a generalized statement about how promulgating the idea that ppd is nonsense is "what they [religions] do"...
I could just be misunderstanding your comment, and if I am, I'm sorry.

It wasn't a knock on all religions. I was just referring to the comment someone posted calling scientology a "cult" and the idea that that might be why TC said what he did. I'm just not surprised that someone who takes their religion to an extreme uses it (the religious teachings) to support their misogynistic views. I just wouldn't be surprised if some Jerry Falwell type said the exact same thing and I think most people don't think Christianity is a cult.
That's what I was really referring to - I hope I didn't offend.
