I got my tax refund today and I am thinking of dontating it to one or more charities. I got a decent amount back from "working" for my dad last summer and I thought I would donate it.
My parents give to a lot to charites. They give to local humane societies and the epilespy (sp) foundation, homeless shelters for men and for abused women and children and hospice, but I was looking for some more ideas.
Where do you ladies give? Thanks!

I give to St Jude's Childrens Research Hospital. It's an amazing hospital that does Cancer and AIDS Research for children. When my sister had cancer at 11 they treated her. The most amazing thing about this hospital is they do not charge for their services. Without it there is no way my parents could have afforded my sisters treatments.

Wow, Collette, I'm glad to see that your family benefitted from these services - I used to do volunteer work on fund raisers for St. Jude's (bass tournament) & I always loved it because they were SO great.

And various military charities to help out low income enlisted families. There are sooo many poor families in the military. Now with so many spouses in Iraq, it's unbelievable hard for some of the families left behind. I also like to give to random charities that need it. I have a hard time saying no! Irks my husband sometimes, but it makes me feel better.

I give to prep school alma mater, undergrad alma mater, and my church (but I give to specific areas I want to support... not just putting $$$ in the offering plate).

I don't know if it is just my local BBBS or around the country, but I hardly any of the donations actually go to the helping the orginzation run. They did a huge report about charities in our area and ones to give to and not to give to. They were like the top one that you should avoid.

I don't give money that much but I've given my time to many charities including crop walk, march of dimes, St. Jude's, Relay for Life, local lutheran homes, humane society, and head start. Let me know if you have any questions about any of them.
Bex- I have been a big sister for almost 6 years and have become very involved in the orginization and yes there is a BIG problem w/ the donations not being used correctly at the one I work w/. There was huge a scandal about it and there were other chapters in the U.S that were having problems. I probably didn't write my response as clearly as I should have. I didn't mean that the BBBS as a whole was using the donations wrong I meant that there were certain isolated places that were. The report was the Better Business Bureua and there were many people in the United Way there were saying the same thing- the donations were not being used properly. I know BBBS is a great orginaztion I have been a big to many kids and see the postive effects, but until my local chapter changes I will only be donating my time.
