Does anyone have a dog with diabetes? The vet just called and Traci has it.
I'm bringing her to the vet on Thursday. They're going to start her on insulin and keep her for the day to make sure she is OK. Then I have to learn how to give her shots (ughhh, I am not looking forward to that) and she will need them twice a day.
I guess I don't even know what question I'm asking. I don't know anything about canine diabetes or anyone who has dealt with this, so I feel totally lost right now.

My aunt and uncle have a chihuahua (sp?) that has it. They've done a good job of keeping her sugars controlled and she's 9 now, having had the diabetes since she was 4. She doesn't even mind the shots anymore, especially because she always gets a very good treat with them .
Just keep in mind the shots probably bother you more than her! I'm sure the vet will be more than willing to walk you through caring for her, what to watch out for, etc. Can you get her insulin online so it will be cheaper? I've had great luck with 1800petmeds, and I know they do Rx stuff but I'm not positive they have insulin ...?
Good luck - keep us updated, 'kay?

Thanks Elle! I can't wait until tomorrow is over - after I've had a chance to talk to the vet, practice the shots, and ask a ton of questions - in the meantime I just keep looking at my baby girl and feeling so sorry for her!
I hadn't even thought of getting the insulin online, that's a great idea! I'll def. look into that.

Aw- I'm sorry for you and Traci. My brother is a vet and I do know that it is manageable with the shots and just regular monitoring. My dog has Addison's disease which is obviously different but a bit similar - he needs meds twice daily and monitoring and he was on shots for a while but he did better on tablets. It was hard at first giving the shots but after a while he was used to it and it wasn't as bad as I thought. Just knowing it was necessary and that if I kept up with the meds he would live a normal life made things easier. I think this is also the case with diabetes. It's tough but it gets easier and vets are always really helpful and willing to help out dog owners who do this as they understand it is hard too. I asked a ton of questions and that helped too. Second the idea of getting the meds the cheapest way possible as the cost can be high.
Hope it goes well and best of luck. It makes it worthwhile to have a happy healthy dog and dogs can do very very well with chronic conditions.
